I'm not really sure what I think of this, there are two sides to it. If everyone has a release clause then the holding club is powerless, and the big money clubs can just take whoever they want. Seems to me that's almost how it is already, but that would complete their dominance.

I think it stops the silly money and gives the club a fair price for their player if they want to leave, it's not like we would have a low amount in for the likes of Coutinho. So the player gets to move the club get money to reinvest. I think it's better than the crazy that was this Summer.

well their business value in total is the question. I have no doubt these days you could take a neymar and generate commercial activity to pay for his star status.

But then... you've 50mil full backs which will never justify their fee in a commercial sense.

If you've 2/3 total starts like mbappe, neymar and whoever thats a club saturated in terms of that commercial work. It really is diminishing returns

If you sign a 25 year old for 50 mil then at the end of his contract ok maybe at 28 someone night give you a wedge of that back but not at 30... so yeah.. most of them are not worth it but to the really big global branded clubs there is value in mega stars.

This summer was all caused by Neymar's release clause. Barcelona weren't interested in Coutinho until that was triggered, and Coutinho had already told Liverpool at the start of the window they could plan on him staying. So release clauses add uncertainty by being able to instantly trigger massive disruptions like this.

He's been included in the CL squad, and should he refuse to play he'd be in breach of contract, end of. Be really interesting how far Kia Jabberwocky wants to go with this. Wonder how much the rest of Ford's contract, plus damages, is worth? And he can't play football for anyone else whilst we hold his registration.

But what would Liverpool actually do in that case? A fundamental breach by the employee can be dealt with either by internal disciplinary action and affirmation of the contract (like Tevez at City), or repudiation and suing for damage (like Mutu at Chelsea).

Repudiation and suing him for damages would basically amount to terminating his contract and claiming damages. Hard to imagine those damages being more than the amount Barca offered in August, so LFC would lose the player for the same or lower fee to what they could have had in August. Affirmation could make the club look weak, like when Tevez ended up only getting fined a month's wages by City when he refused to play and then ended up leaving for Juve for a fraction of his value a year or so later.

If he does refuse to play, which I do reckon is doubtful and based more on Spanish tabs trying to stir up sales, it would be anything other than 'end of'.

I was talking about the valuation before crazy stepped in. Don't tell me before 'crazy' you would have valued Sigurdsson at £45m or Keane at £25m You did overspend big time, so did a few other clubs.

The algorithm is flawed because it uses a player's book value (i.e. the unamortised value of their last transfer) as part of the transfer value. Pickford has zero book value as he was a Sunderland youth player, whilst Matic and Sakho were at their previous clubs for four years and so their last transfer has been almost fully amortised. You can't meaningfully compare their book values with those of Salah, Rudiger and Mendy who only moved last summer and thus their book value will be the price of their last transfer.

It's basically applying historic cost accounting to assets whose value is not at all related to their historic cost.

What you talking about, he played 30 times for city and scored a handful of goals. Sakho got sent home from preseason and didn't play for us again, just as Nolito joined city

Nolito is another one who only moved last summer, therefore the value they assign to him is based on that fee plus how good he actually is. In fact if you take out the 17m euros City paid for him, he is actually worth the 10m euros they sold him for.

No it doesn't. For a start, the first thing it does is estimate the level of the buying club.
