It might very well have been a case that Jude wasn't going to come to us anyway if we don't have CL football. We might have been his preferred destination if all other things were equal, but he surely wants to play at the top.

I've no doubt that he and his family were, regardless of CL football, but I think FSG thought there was some clause or something and that there'd be no bidding war (and that he'd take half the wages he'd get at City of Real).
Well all that being said if you say about last summer and saw a player taking off in terms of career but said ah no let's wait till after the world cup and that then you'd be very very foolish. his price has probably had 50mil added in 12months.
Think FSG look at situations like that and think "We could buy now for £50m and make another £50m when his value doubles in a year - or we could save £50m by waiting a year till he's too expensive for us to buy anyway". It's basically how ****ing accountants ran businesses in the recession and earned themselves bonuses.
if your club was psg and you monopolise the league then sure it makes perfect sense to keep the 50mil for yourself each year. the problem is now fsg have the oh **** moment that they've saved the 50mil and have just cost themselves at least that in revenue by not being in the cl.
