I've never understood the love of mascherano and under rating of alonos round here.

alonso proved it time and time again for real and bayern

Indeed. Alonso was probably the most balanced midfielder we had. Maybe wasn't as good attacking as Gerrard and maybe wasn't as good at defending as Mascherano but he didn't really have any weak points. He was very good all around.

Alonso was a good jack of all trades midfielder with an excellent distribution range. I'd love to have Alonso back in his prime, but he wasn't anywhere near as good as Mash at tackling. I've never seen another midfielder in Liverpool red who was as good at tackling as Mash. He just made it all look so effortless. I feel like what we're missing most is a defensive midfielder who can just stop attacks from making it to the back line.

He’s an odd one. Came to Brighton as a number 10 creative playmaker but never really found any kind of form and suddenly this season his stats defensively have been very very good. Still not 100% where and what kind of role he would play and if he’s just having a good season or is hitting his potentisl

I think he would be perfect as our LCM. He more than puts a shift in and his technical ability is incredible - would be the perfect Thiago replacement but has legs to get about!
