i'm a bit between in that i'm not convinced but he would be an upgrade on most of our midfielders at present but cost seems likely to be prohibitive .

I'm underwhelmed by the prospect too.

He does play with lots of energy, maybe it's contagious and that's the reason behind it.

if he lifts the league, fa cup, league Cup, champions league, super cup and World club trophies as Liverpool captain I suppose we will have to put up with him.

He does offer a bit more of an attacking threat than our normal midfielders with the exception of Elliott but that is probably because he isn't a midfielder really .

Mount is an attacking midfielder, we need a Kante type midfielder and someone who can control the pace of a game like Gerrard used to.

Well as long as they are not one and the same player ;)

I've always said this and always got thrown shade for saying it but.... alonso was the far better midfielder, he ran further, covered team mates, could pass just as good, better tackler etc etc.

Gerrard was in effect at his best as a rw and then a 10 for rafa. he only dropped to no 6 under Rodgers.

alonso was the best 6 in the business bar none. forget your kantes or whoever. he was absolutely brilliant player.

I'd love a Alonso (or Mascherano) in this current side

Remembering when we had 'the best midfield in the world '. Where can we get a time machine?

    not a mascherano thanks.

I just don't think he was actually very good on the ball.

I'd rather a younger fabinho any day.

that midfield though with klopp's forwards would have been fairly tasty

I'd take Mash. He's the one player we're missing most. Not technically as good as Gerrard or Alonso. Didn't score as many goals... But we need someone who can tackle anyone cleanly from any angle in midfield and always win that tackle.

Mount wouldn’t be on my list of priorities but he is a good player with a great engine.

    alonso.

    you've described alonso.

I've never understood the love of mascherano and under rating of alonos round here.

alonso proved it time and time again for real and bayern

Alonso was a good jack of all trades midfielder with an excellent distribution range. I'd love to have Alonso back in his prime, but he wasn't anywhere near as good as Mash at tackling. I've never seen another midfielder in Liverpool red who was as good at tackling as Mash. He just made it all look so effortless. I feel like what we're missing most is a defensive midfielder who can just stop attacks from making it to the back line.

    no you are dreaming.

alonso consistently topped every running chart in his time for us.

he covered the full back and cb when they went forward really unselfishly.

he was in the right position so didn't have to make dive in tackles, he was a monster at tough tackling in stand up play

    he had massive vision

mascherano was nowhere near the level of alonso.

Just pulling up 08/09 statistics. Mascherano 77% tackle success rate. Alonso 69%.

I'm not going to talk down all Alonso did for us, but he wasn't a purely defensive midfielder. Even Lucas had higher tackle % than Alonso.

We all know statistics don't tell the whole story though and in this case I think it's unfair to Mash even though he's ahead. Mash would come out of nowhere to attempt tackles.

Passing the ball, taking free kicks, shooting at goal, covering ground... Sure Alonso better at all those.

For guarding the back four and stopping attacks before they happen, that was Mash's speciality... And even though Alonso was better as an all-round midfielder, I feel like a Mash type player is what we're lacking the most.
