Indeed. Alonso was probably the most balanced midfielder we had. Maybe wasn't as good attacking as Gerrard and maybe wasn't as good at defending as Mascherano but he didn't really have any weak points. He was very good all around.
He’s an odd one. Came to Brighton as a number 10 creative playmaker but never really found any kind of form and suddenly this season his stats defensively have been very very good. I think he would be perfect as our LCM. He more than puts a shift in and his technical ability is incredible - would be the perfect Thiago replacement but has legs to get about!
