not sure about Can but for sure probably windy was affected by this. Its about value i suppose when you get 2 years to the end of any deal. a 24 year old signing a 5 year deal can be flogged for big bucks at age 27 or 28. A 29 year old who endes up 32/33 and looking shaky becomes a bruden. Its going to be a key part of it I think you are right. The option to exptend might be the way to go, or at least try fro the clubs perspective. As jimmy keeps saying we were happy to shovel 200k at henderson up to age 35.
But the other argument is that we weren't;t winning anything because we kept losing our best players. Then we started buying and keeping quality players which led to success ...
Lol. My gripe with the Hendo contract is that it goes against our incredibly smart football operations since Klopp has been here, and how we've been ruthless when needed e.g Can and Gini. Hendo is already over 30, picking more injuries and isn't getting any better. He already had a contract until he was 33 so doing his contract was not a priority. If anything, we should have waited longer so that he could prove he can last until he's 35. Salah on the other hand is younger, fitter, looks physically incredible and is actually getting better. In both examples, committing a huge amount of money to these contracts is always a risk.
Yes, but my argument has always been that there'll be someone else in the wings waiting to step in - even if we haven't heard of them yet. You can't deny that there was considerable bleating over the loss of all of the 3 names I mentioned at the time. Whatever, it's out of our hands so we can talk about it all we like but what will be, will be.
Yep I have no doubts that we would replace him well as I have a lot more faith in our recruitment these days. I just feel that we should be striving to keep our best players, let alone the best player in the world right now.
as i've said before i supported Hendo when most were giving him pelters but like Jimmy i just didn't see the need for a new contract and certainly not on much better terms .
I don’t see the issue tbh. He wants to stay, he’s currently on fire and probably at the minute the best player in the world. It might cost your club another £10-15m a year to keep him, where’s the problem? Just pay it, get him signed, job done,
The Hendo one is a bit odd - I grant you. Though it's interesting that Pep Lijnders says how important Milner is to the club off the pitch, so maybe there's more than meets the eye with Hendo too? Don't know, I'm guessing. I have no problem with offering Mo up to £350k, like I said - it's the claims that the media are bandying about that I disagree with, though as I've mentioned they could well be just clickbait BS. On Mo's fitness - yeah he looks great atm - but it's just guesswork how long he can keep it up, which is why I asked the question about the length of contract. My concern would be that he's having a peak period of 6-7 years after joining us, and it could tail off. On his place in world's best players, he's certainly up there atm. However, players like Messi or Ronnie heralded their superstar status from a very early age whereas Mo has had to make steady progress to where he is now, and I can't help thinking that it's largely serendipity - he's been at the right club, with the right manager, at the right time, for him.
I agree. Of the three mentioned, I personally never thought Coutinho or Sterling were quite as big as they were billed. Suarez was, but he was determined to leave no matter what we offered him, so unless we wanted half the league with bite-marks we had to let him go.
Come to our club? We cant afford the transfer fees anyway. This is about salah wanting to be paid like those players not us wanting any of them
Completely agree with you. But then we set a precedence with Hendo's contract which is why I'm hell bent that we should be signing up Salah (which I'm sure will be done).
One of the things I admire about your posts is the use of language, particularly words that I don't read anywhere near often enough. Serendipity
Out of interest what would the precedent be that we were setting if we paid Salah £400k? I don't personally think it would be setting a precedent. It could well be a one-off 'reward' contract for an outstanding player. I can, however, think of a few. To name one - that a player could hold us over a barrel to get what he wanted. I just wondered what others see as the precedent.
I'd agree. It is nearly double our current max so its inevitable others will want to go up to their own new perceived level. It's hard to know however compared to other clubs as each seems different
