Why Liverpool want Simon Mignolet to stay
In a Liverpool transfer summer that has long seemed destined to be a quiet one, the thought of bringing in a goalkeeper to act as understudy to undoubted first-choice Alisson was a crumb of comfort to the transfer-hungry.

But what’s the point of doing that if you’ve already got a perfectly good one?

If Monday’s news that the Reds are happy to hold on to Simon Mignolet for the coming season - and indeed the next one, as that’s when his contract runs out - wasn’t exactly a surprise, what perhaps was is the idea that he seems happy to stay too

I'm good with that.

If he's happy I'm happy. He may just be the best number 2 keeper in the league?

I'd have to agree. city can defend long ball. they can win the title with 75% possession in england... its the CL they want and teams will target maguire there cos while he's tall and good in air he is just not going to cut it on the ground and pass it about.

I actually think Maguire will do brilliantly for city. Dunno why anyone thinks he's not good in the ball, hes really good on it imo and calm (well dribbling it out, not seen enough of his passing).

His weakness is hes a big lump and can be beaten by pace but in the pep side im not sure he will be that exposed (in the pl anyway) purely because:

Teams dont attack as much
Peps teams defend by outnumbering at the back (2 on 1s etc)
Most importantly city are dirty and get physical and get away with it. Maguire is exceptionally strong and will get away with nudging the striker out the way since the refs love pep and city

80m for him though is a joke though

It's not like ours is hugely brilliant right now.

Home-grown players:
Jordan Henderson
James Milner
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Adam Lallana
Nathaniel Clyne ( soon to go)

Club-trained players:

Trent Alexander-Arnold
Joe Gomez
Rhian Brewster (age mean won't be registered)
Harry Wilson
Camacho in theory.

You can actually see the effort to bring more through and also to retain even though a player like lallana is a big resource sink.

Does it go by the players birthday or a league cut off date like with u21s?

Origi joined when he was 19 so may qualify if it's the u21 cut off dates

I agree he's not bad on the ball. I think he's too slow and not the greatest defender. Great in the air though
