Oh and di Maria is the exception. I don't remember ever seeing a player settle so quickly. We will see if it lasts all season or if it tappers off.

Not having a go but off the top of my head, Costa and Cesc have settled very well this season, and Sturridge for Liverpool was excellent.
 
I can't see how Ozil had a 'great' first Season.

For me Ozil has barely gotten out of second gear for us. He is obviously low on confidence (despite the WC).

A break might be exactly what he needs. (even if it has been brought on by injury)
 
Looking at the stats he got 10 assists in the league last season, 5 of which came in 2 games against Cardiff and Stoke. He has 1 so far this season from 6 appearances

Exactly.

Before we bought Ozil he was THE most creative player in Europe.

He has clearly not been anywhere near his best. For me he needs a good run of games in the no.10 position and hopefully this layoff will do him some good in terms of motivation.

I have to say though I think Mesut will perform better with a defensive midfielder sitting behind him. There's no clear roles in our team.
 
I agree with you guys, I don't think Ozil's first season was far from great, it was decent but far from great. Following on from Krome's breakdown, he got most of his assists in the first 13 games and then went on a trot of 9 games with only one assist and no goals. After that he got a hamstring injury and came back with a goal and assist in his last 4 PL games. Against the top sides he played against - Chelsea, City, United and Liverpool, he got got 2 assists (1 v pool and 1 v City) and 0 goals. His assist influenced the win v Pool (2-0).

His stats are as good as any other number ten in the country last season. He basically has identical stats to David silva last season. If that isn't doing great for a first year in the country then god knows what he'd have to achieve for you to take notice. Add to that his arrival galvanised the entire team and we put in our first title challenge and got our first trophy in years with him as one of our most key players and you'd have to say he's done very well at the start of his career with us.

Yes, I said he's had a good first season. But for £40m I'd expect nothing less. And I agree with most of what you've said. But he's not been 'great'. He's not played to any sort of consistent level where he can be called irreplaceable.

Your praise for him reads quite patronisingly (not that that's a word) and seems almost a bit defensive, in order to justify our huge outlay on him. Let's face it... if we'd bough him for £15m and he'd had exactly the same performances and stats I doubt any of us would be going, "whoa we've got a worldy on our hands". I think we'd all think the same as we are now. Good first season, nothing brilliant yet. But when consider he was £40m... meh, I kind of expect a bit more than that. He's the most expensive player on the pitch in most matches he plays in but you wouldn't know it most of the time... yet. But then the fee is not his fault and neither is the completely absurd system that he's asked to play in. What's absurd is spending £40m on someone and the using him like we have a lot of the time.
 
Express reckons that we will go back in for Draxler in January

Sturridge is an English player going from one English club to another, that's not a foreigner settling into our league. And cesc played here for eight years.

You made a point about players not making an instant impact and I made a point of 3 players making an instant impact on moving, one of which hasn't played in the prem. You also made a point of saying that Ozil had a great season, which was not the case. He cost over £40m and his return was decent, but far from great. Costa in comparison is having a great season with Chelsea and has made an immediate impact with Chelsea, as has Cesc and Sturridge.

she would be just the kind of player we need , until she dont quite work out .

Then it would be the case that she needs time to settle .

probably 2 or 3 seasons.

Fabregas and Costa and De Maria were just lucky that they settled straight away .

Draxler would probably be the same .

A couple of seasons to really "settle in "

My point was about foreign players settling in the prem, using ozil and di Maria as the players being talked about. It'd be a pretty stupid point to say no players settle at new clubs ever as there are countless of examples of players moving between prem teams and having an immediate impact. Figured it was obvious that wasn't the point I was making but reading back I can see I didnt specify foreigners, so apologies if my point was unclear.
 
Aguero, Kompany, Silva, Sagna, Debuchy, Fernandinho... All immediately springing to mind as settling in straight away

Yeah but he only had Van persie up front and Nasri to work with .

You know , that squad which contained Fabregas , Vela, Van Persie , Nasri , Adebayor, ......

and still won , nothing .not a damned thing .

What kind of manager wins NOTHING , with a team like that to work with ?
