Nice early transfer rumour that it's us and city fighting it out to sign reus when his release clause kicks in.

I'd love him at the club.

Express has a story linking us to bringing in Lassana Diarra at DM. He's a free agent so we could sign him now. Some people will scorn at Wenger for not signing a DM in the summer, but the pragmatist would see this as a good temporary move. Diarra looked just like the DM we needed when he had a brief spell with us before forcing his way out of the club.

Wouldn't say no but he'd be far from a priority, another luxury signing

Diarra should never have left us in the first place, he looked good for that brief period we had him. Sounds like hye's gash now though

Was a big mistake letting him go in the first place but getting him in would shore things up in the DM department. Good temp solution.

We had Gilberto, Flamini and Diarra who could play DM at the time and Diarra requested a transfer. Wenger urged him to be patient and fight for his place but the player wanted a move and ended up at Portsmouth. I think he could have been a big player for Arsenal and it's a shame he didn't stay. Not seen much of him recently so I don't know what he's like now, but when he played for us and Chelsea he was a tenacious ball winner and a busy and mobile DM.

He's probably the best of what's available. Wouldn't mind him being given a trial & a deal til January / end of the season with a clause in the contract that Arsenal can extend it for another 2 years with a payrise of x amount. That way the club can't lose really.

<ok> agreed, really think he could do a job for us and mentioned previously I was sad to see him leave in the first place.

Anyone see the financial results posted.

We have £173 million in 'cash reserves'. (Essentially transfer funds)

What you playing at Arsene. Look at the state of our defence.

I am coming round to the idea that it would be better if Wenger doesn't touch that money and it is given to his successor, who I think should replace him in the summer. Imagine what a top manager could do with that money to improve our already good squad, along with fresh tactics.

£173m in reserves doesn't equate to £173m in transfer funds.

Ok so the cash reserves are needed to fund operating costs including the 30m a year we pay on the stadium. Whilst we could probably still afford to spend on a 10-20m player, maybe a defender. We don't have some huge pile of unspent cash sitting waiting to be used on players.

We are in a far more healthy financial position than we have for a long time, but that's not the same as having 200m sitting in the bank for transfers.

I know it doesn't but how many clubs made it though the 'financial crisis' with massive reserves in cash. The answer would be none.

The reason we failed to sign more defensive replacements is purely because the boss waited until the final day of the transfer window to make a move, in order to try and find a bargain. So as always economics were placed above competition at Arsenal.
