I can't see the club paying £35 million and risk losing a player for a lot less after two years.
I totally agree with you that the figures are frightening and some teams are spending these sums with money that they haven't really got.

The Higuain 3 / 5 year deal is an interesting one from a fans perspective.

Would people rather we missed out if his advisors stuck to a 3 year deal and we risked losing him after two years and potentially £35m. Or would people whinge about Wenger / Gazidis if they stuck to a 5 year deal, thereby protecting the club's interests ?

Many will whinge about which ever of the 2 actually happen, regardless.

Your question points to one of my concerns. That is that the club is coerced into spending big, whether on the correct player/s or not, just to shut up the moronic element of the fan base. If that happens, we will have taken the first step of a slippery slope whereby we could soon see the fans picking our managers a lá Hoddle & Ardiles.....omfg <shiver>

My personal view is that the club don't really give a **** about the whinging fans who just want to see us spend big money for the sake of it. And I say thank **** for that <ok> The last thing we need is a bunch of spineless spivs at the helm who just want to appease the noisy minority for the sake of short-termism

"Short-termism" is one thing you cannot blame this current board of directors for....

Although we applaud the safety measures the board has employed over the years to make us financially strong, sometimes you have to take the odd risk. This is one such time they really need to have a roll of the dice and go for it. With 3 new managers coming in and with Fergie gone, next season will be one of our best chances to go for the league or win some silverware.

Taking a risk could be Arsene being blindfolded and sticking a pin in a random list of available players....would that suffice?

I'm sure they are well aware of all the top players available. No one is asking them to throw money away, just pay a little extra if neccessary to secure the signiture. I'm sure we are well within our means and reputation to bring top quality players in. We did attract Arshavin, Cazorla and Podolski and brought them in when it became neccessary. The last time i checked, Arsenal had the second largest stadium in the country, backed up with plenty of financial clout.

I hear that, but not any old 'top quality player' is the right 'top quality player' and we are not desperate enough to pay well over the odds for a player just to satisfy a few grumblers. That said, I would applaud the club if they were to spend £85m to lure Ronaldo Reagan to the club :)

He would solve our forward problems. One thing old Ronald had is plenty of firepower at his disposal....

But agreed, the right player and not any old player should be the case.

:emoticon-0107-sweatBundesliga side Frankfurt have cooled talk of securing the signing of Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner.

The player’s agent, Tom Brookes, had previously stated that a deal was close for the Denmark international.

But Frankfurt executive chairman Heribert Bruchhagen has moved to quell rumours that his club are in the running for the 25-year-old’s signature.

“(The) chances are slim that Nicklas Bendtner will be joining us,” Bruchhagen told Die Welt.

“He is simply in a different salary class and even if we would be able to pay those wages.

“We would just be able to afford a Nicklas Bendtner inside our wage budget. I would think it is definitely unrealistic to believe Arsenal FC could be out to heavily subsidise this deal.”

The Dane is deemed surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium and spent last season on loan at Serie A champions Juventus.

Bentner is becoming like a turd that just wont flush, I wish he would just take a pay cut and be done with it, he simply is not good enough to expect massive wages, here is a noval idea, go out and prove your worth with a club then they might be willing to pay you more.

Agree with this too <ok> and whilst I applaud them for not going down the 'sell your soul to the devil' route, I think the board have been TOO cautious over the last few seasons.

I think they should have called RVPs bluff and kept him for his final season, with his goals last season we could have been title contenders. Also, I think the board backed themselves into a corner over the whole 'Lockdown' agreement a few seasons ago. If they hadn't been so concerned with keeping it all 'in the family', they could have had a small share sale to raise funds for the squad, which might have meant we could have kept Cesc, Nasri, Flamini, RVP etc
