How many first XI players do people think that we need to replace, assuming that we keep our best players?

a keeper
a fullback to support Benny
a centreback
a real attacking midfielder
a striker in Ade's mould
a striker like Yak who can do a job and doesnt mind the bench.

We're being linked with Mexes, now.
Sounds unlikely, though he seems to have barely played for Milan and I guess he'd know Kaboul from recent France call ups.

Clint Dempsey? dont think he will cost much..my only fear is he wont have the role at our club that he gets at fulham thus him scoring 4 goals and all of us calling him a dud!

just like Pienaar.

but just like with Pienaar, ill blame the gaffer for that one.

Mexes has always been a good player, and not a bad addition to be honest. only problem i've noticed, is that he's a bit of a livewire. - might be a bit of a nightmare with yellow cards; just about everytime i've seen him he's been booked! in addition, he is beginning to kick on.. must be at least 30 by now? Then again, if ledley retires, as does gallas, we don't have much experience at the back for guidance. Just sawson really.

as for WY's question on First XI signings.

a top quality centre back
a versatile winger
an attacking midfielder
2 strikers.

This is based on a few assumptions.

1) Friedel wishes to continue. if he doesn't, add a keeper to that list
2) we make CL football. if so, we need squad rotation next season. Having Dawson, Kaboul and Caulker will not be enough. We need to strengthen here, as i feel Nelsen, Gallas and King could all retire. even if 2 out of those 3 decide to do so, we need to strengthen, still. (IMO)
3) Modric isn't sold. - otherwise we need to replace him also.
4) Saha's deal isnt extended and we don't sign Ade on a perm. Or, we lose Defoe for that matter!

5 players (+ a goalkeeper potentially) might seem like a lot, but if we're in the CL next season, we have to rotate. Getting so far in the FA cup this year made a difference and fatique has played a part in recent weeks. add CL football to that midweek, where we WONT be putting the kids out, and we'll struggle without a big squad, being used correctly. - but hey, we have all said this a million times in one way, or another.

if Blackburn go down, which is quite likely... would anyone be against a cheeky bid for PR?

I know we saw him go through a bad spell, but that was only because of the England howler. overall he's been a great goalkeeper throughout his career. he looks to be doing well at blackburn, despite their position.

just also noticed on his wikipedia profile, that he's played 2 games less for blackburn than us, with 2 prem games to go. only difference is that he scored for us! ;)

at 32, he wouldn't cost much and would still have a few years in him. just a thought....

Would love to see Robbo back, haven't seem him make any howlers at Blackburn though he hasn't shone...

Dempsey is also a very good shout, massively underrated and overlooked by the big clubs, would fill the criteria of versatile winger quite well I think.

Looks like we all want the same players.

We've wanted to see Banega in a red shirt for some time... back off! He's ours!

He is one of the best wingers in the world. The papers are so lazy nowadays - they just throw our name in everywhere

totally agree. why is our name even linked to these sorts of players? VDV is the only world class player we've bought in recent years, who was world class at the time we purchased.

we don't spend big and don't have the ability to compete on wages. when will the journalists get it? like you say, lazy journalism.

lots of reports today suggesting that we've opened talks with Vertonghen today. Granted, most of the sources are sh*te, and rip each other off, but still.... there could be something in that. - perhaps Levy's read the forum and decided to make our dreams of "early signings" come true? <laugh> hopefully the first of many. (ok I'm hoping! gimme a break!)

also linked to PSV playmaker Georginio Wijnaldum, apparently. Again, could be bullsh*t.

Centre Back

Winger

Striker

Three players, as we won't have the perfect squad, no one does, even the top teams like utd and city have fairly average players in their first team/squad but what we need is three big signings, keep the current squad and make sure players like rose get their chance.

Vertonghen was talking with arsenal yesterday! They obviously decided to replay the same story and change the club name <laugh>
