As annoyed as we get with having our players constantly linked with other clubs in the press, imagine supporting Ajax. They barely go a day without someone being linked with a move and that's just with English clubs.
We've been linked with Vertonghen since December - he (and Rasmus Elm) were prospective buys for January that got pushed back to the end of the season. It might be an idea to remind their clubs of this... This is uncanny... Georginio Wijnaldum please log in to view this image Jerson Cabral please log in to view this image They're both 21 They're both 5'10" They're both graduates of the Feyenoord academy They're both attacking midfielders that can operate on the wing They look remarkably similar On paper, Wijnaldum is the better option as he has more experience playing for both Feyenoord and PSV plus has European experience - he's scored more goals this season as well, albeit he's played more games. They both seem capable of scoring and creating, but there is one advantage - Georginio Wijnaldum can play in the middle or on the right, Cabral can play on the left or in the VDV role, so we could sign both and fit them into the team. Given they've played together through the ranks at Feyenoord, that could work out nicely for us.
Wijnaldum, another player I always used to sign on FM 08. Shame I could never stick with a game long enough to see if he came good or not...
Any word on Big Tom Huddlestone's condition? He's been out for so long, now, that getting him back will seem like a fresh signing. On song, he's magnificent to watch...
The hair, we can probably do without (besides, his could never compete with Benny's) - but having him fit gives us numerous options in the way we set up (and - are you listening, Mr Redknapp ? - plenty of scope for some decent squad rotation).
imagine if we get Pienaar back, the commentators are going to have a massive struggle trying to work out who's in possession of the ball! Infact, no they won't. harry doesn't rotate the squad.
Me too! I've never actually seen Wijnaldum, Cabral or Vertonghen for the matter actually play. Does anyone know if these guys are actually any good? Especially Vertonghen, everyone seems to think he'll slot straight into the starting XI. I know Belgium have some good centre backs with Kompany and Vermaelen so maybe Vertonghen can follow suit but I'm just curious as to how many people have actually seen him enough to notice he'll slot straight in. Is he a classy centre back like King or a "rough and rugged don't give a f*ck I'll head butt you if you're in my way" Kaboul type?
Vertonghen's a footballer, SoS. He's comfortable on the ball, likes to bring it out from the back and he gets the odd goal. He's left-footed too, so he'd probably complement Kaboul pretty well all round.
It's a definite possibility, but they think that about a lot of players. I'm sure that we'll know where he's headed sooner, rather than later, HD. EDIT: One thing that might swing it in our favour is that we can offering him a starting place. Not sure that they can. EDIT again: Two reports out now. Redknapp saying that we're not in talks, but that he's watched him. De Boer saying that he should join Barca, not us. Odd.
if redknapp is saying we aren't in talks, we will be. he always plays everyone down and says "that's being dealt with by the chairman". it's whether we can get him to play for us. I reckon he'll be at arsenal, personally. But levy is pretty good at getting his own way. Perhaps Levy might be telling him of other players we have our eye on, and where we're heading for next season. - I don't see arsenal spending much this year, as they recovered very well and are playing good football. however, i do think they might snap up vertonghen as arsenal fans seems to only really like vermarlean and kosielny, meaning they require more quality across central defence.
Cheers PNP. Just had a look at a youtube clip of him on youtube, can strike the ball well that's for sure and the left-footed aspects of his game is a rarity in centre backs, could be a good partner for Kaboul as you say.
If we've been in contact with Ajax since December, that either means we've got the advantage after a long series of discussions over fee etc, or we've utterly mucked it up and let other clubs steal a march on us. It's the Tottenham way, after all!
that we won't know, until the story comes out after he's signed for someone. what I am convinced of, is that we've been in talks with his reps for some time. How can you admire a player for 4 months, and not make any contact. absolute bullsh*t. Just harry saying that incase he goes elsewhere, to cover our arse.
We did seem to bodge a lot of potential moves in January: Vertonghen - Were in talks, yet the move stalled until the end of the season Elm - Supposedly agreed to join at the end of the season, but that doesn't seem to be the case ATM Krasic - Had a deal in place to bring him in on loan ahead fo a permanent move, but that fell through as he wanted a permanent move in January (as confirmed by Harry) Banega - Made an approach to loan him in ahead of a permanent move, but Valencia weren't interested If our strategy for January was to loan in players so we could negotiate a couple of million off their value in the summer, or in the case of Vertonghen trying to sign a player whilst the club was still in European competition, it's no wodner we ended up with Saha and Nelsen. We were more concerned about saying "what if" for various scenarios at the end of the season than adding to and improving our squad for the second half of the season.
