What is your criteria for tipping lads?

For me if the service is good and food good I’ll tip.

I don’t have a fixed percentage but can easily tip 10% plus on occasions.

Once in an average food place in LA I got a load of **** off a waitress because I ‘only’ tipped 10% when the lass was ignorant, the beer flat and the foood was no better than dog food.

The yank i was with called me a tight fisted limey twat and made it up to 20%.

Here in the UK I have a policy of not tipping at all if they cheeky bastards put it on first and ‘invite me’ to take it off. It should be the other way around IMHO.
 
Same. Around 10% if the service/food was good. Equally have not tipped at all on occasions where neither good, or in particular when staff are rude.

In the US, they expect more as wages in waitor/waitressing jobs are low but their higher average tips make up a good chunk of their income. still, they can't expect 20% if they are rude or serve crap food.

I'll happily give 10% if happy with everything. Having said that if it's a quick lunch I won't usually bother. Only really of I'm out for dinner.

Tipping in the US is out of hand. Its a ridiculous system.
 
In restaurants, yes, 10% if satisfied. If I've had to wait too long for service or been ignored for too long or the food wasn't up to scratch then I'll leave less or nothing. What about pizza/takeaway delivery drivers? I will normally just give them a quid or 2.

Tipping is disgusting in The States. 20% is expected. I tipped $60 on a $322 restaurant bill and my American mate still felt he had to put in the extra $5 to make it 20% rather than the 19% that I had tipped. Then there's also the problem of other situations in bars, hotels, etc. where you're like "am I meant to tip here?". They want to just pay their staff properly in the first place.
 
It's mad in the states. Not only can some places pay less than minimum wage because the staff can expect tips, but others make the staff 'tip out' - pay a % of every bill to the other staff in the kitchen, so if you tip less than 10% they're actually losing money on serving you. Hence the yanks being so insistent on tipping a minimum.
 
No problem with tipping to match food quality and for good service, but I always check with the waiter/waitress that they receive the tip or at least a shareout. (with the kitchen staff etc.)
Too many places the boss/manager's/company keep the tip or an "admin share" which is why I check first and if need be pass cash direct to the waiting staff. At least I know then that it goes in their pocket.

I used to live in the US of A, before going I knew they loved tips, however 1st night there I went out on the drink with the lads from work. Anyway, ordered a round, handed over the cash and accepted the change to the bar lass who was twisting her face, I had no idea why. 1 of the yanks I worked with asked her what was wrong and she said I didn't leave a tip, he tried explaining I was new etc but she wouldn't have it. I assumed you left a tip when you leave not with every single round. Mental ****s

It's an abysmal situation to allow business owners to boost profitability by putting customer service agents at odds with customers. Our system is a million times better than the US.

It doesn't even make fiscal sense to hamper the market like that, because you then lose your profit paying for customer service at other businesses because of the culture you have effectively helped propagate.

They are backwards as ****.

I like to tip in the UK, because I feel it's not expected and can brighten someone's day!

Anyway, usually I tip about 20% or so, more if the service is really good or if it’s one of those cheap late night places where people are hustling to keep body and soul together. (Much more in the latter case).

Always give a tip in restaurants and taxis unless Service has actually been added to the bill. This would be ~10% in restaurants in the UK and 15-20% in States and with taxis normally round up the bill. Its not really expected in Asian countries but do it anyway. Normally have fights with Mrs who always tries to get me to give smaller tips.

You tip your own servants to drive you around? Mind you, 10% of fook all isn't really being that nice. I bet you are one of those people who love to tell everyone that you "do a lot for charridy, but don't like to talk about it".
 
I have worked in Hotels and Bars from junior management to being General Manager, as a junior I would get tips and they helped being on low wages, as a senior manager on much better salaries I would never take a share of my staffs tips, I don't like business owners having control of cash tips either as I have found that many of them skim them, Indian business owners are the worst for taking staff tips. I always advise as well that if asked by customers to always indicate preference for cash tips as all credit card tips are taxed by HMRC and again many business owners will keep them, HMRC also will automatically adjust tax codes for hospitality staff to tax them based on a notional level of tips, it doesn't matter if you don't get them to HMRC unless you can prove it, not easy. As for myself I tip if service was good, usually 10%, I tip waiting staff, taxi's and barber, being in the food trade for so long one of the things that I do differentiate is bad service against inexperience, new staff who are young and only learning their job get a lot of leeway from me against the rude, bad and just indifferent, I also don't agree with service charges on menus etc, that is usually a piss take by the business owner and just a way of inflating their profit.
