I always thought that it was Les Paul (one of, if not THE, greatest guitarists who ever lived) and (his wife) Mary Ford, who's version was played at the old Boothferry Park when i was a lad:

That was a hit version by Les Paul/Mary Ford recorded in 1952. So which version was played from 1946?

Wasn't it this one?

From 1947 my favourite vantage point was at the the very back of of the North Stand behind the goal, stood on a metal bar about a metre from the floor and hanging on to a roof girder. A speaker was positioned not too far away and prior to the song being played one could clearly hear the sound of the needle being placed on the record. As I recall the whole version was not played and only the last 30 or so seconds of the Mills Bros recording was used.

At that time my dad had the Mills Bros. version on a 78rpm record which I regularly played.

Maybe I was too far from the speakers in the south stand but I don't remember any singing on the record played at BP. Is my memory totally wrong?

As you were there in the '40's YT which version do you think it was?
That is the problem. I have listened to all the versions on YouTube for another thread some time ago (I think there are about 43 of them!) and can't really say I heard the version played at BP in the 40s. It just seemed to me that it was only part of a recording, was instrumental in the main and was a much faster tempo than the Mills Brothers version posted above. I think the nearest was the Les Paul version but as you pointed out before, it was not recorded until later in the 1950s.

any version has to be better than that vilest of vile eye of the tiger.
i heard tiger feet being played on telly after one of the home games

We used to use the very same perch from the mid fifties, good view you could lean into the upright girders as well if they were free.
