Sophie Scholl....noted. Thanks mate.

I think you will like it. She was a student at Munich University, who along with her brother and some other students organised a protest newspaper against Hitler in 1943 and handed them out to people. They were arrested by the Gestapo but she refused to tell on her friends and resisted right up to the point they executed her. Even in her show trial she wouldn't let the Nazi judge turn it into a propoganda tool and gave as good as she got.

In a recent poll the German people voted her as the second greatest german of all time just behind Beethoven yet she is barely known outside of germany.

That sounds awesome, is that a book or a film?

Is Into the Wild the film with Meryl Streep in?

No its stars Christopher McCandless and directed by Sean Penn. About a young guy who turns his back on the modern world. Leaves home, burns all his possessions and money and just wonders around the USA enjoying the moment and seeking adventure. Won't say anymore because it would spoil it but it is a great film.

Both. German language film called "Sophie Scholl" and there is a book called "Sophie Scholl and the White Rose". White Rose was the name of the organisation they were forming. The book also contains the newsletters as appendices at the back. Can't recommend them enough.

Just added that to my rental list on lovefilm, will probably watch that once i'm back from holiday.

I was thinking that i'd much rather that as a book than as a film, and i'm not a fan of German language. The book is translated to English i'm guessing? If so that may have to be another that I purchase after my holiday.

Off to Sidari, Corfu for a week next friday! Never been before but i've heard it's nice out there!

Brilliant. Never been to Corfu, but I have been to a place called Sivota. It's on the Greek mainland opposite Corfu (just south of the Albanian border). You can see Corfu across the water. Absolutely love it, its the nicest part of Greece i've been too.

Should have a great time. In case I don't remember closer to the day I hope you have a great holiday! :)

Yes the book is in english. The book is a non-fictional history basically whilst the film is a piece of cinema so you don't get anywhere near as much information. But as it was made in Germany not hollywood it is very restrained and true to the facts. No manufactured fight scenes or chases to spice it all up in the misguided belief that you will fall asleep if you aren't spoon fed something exciting every ten minutes or so. Just a good factual drama.

Hmm the book is very tempting and although the film doesn't sound bad, i would much rather read the book.

Cool i'm sure you find it as interesting as I did. I was going to say enjoy it, but it isn't really the sort of book you enjoy if you know what I mean?

Anyway fella I'm heading to bed I think ... starting to flag and all that!

Night all! :)
