We have a family of blackbirds in our garden. The chics usually can’t fly for 2 or 3 days after they come out the nest and are susceptible to predators. When the local sparrowhawk is around I’m out flapping my arms and chasing him away!I'm slowly turning my back garden into a wildlife friendly place. Any new plants I buy have to pollinator approved. I get loads of bees and insects now.
Bird drama this evening. I've previously said that a pair of blackbirds have been building a nest in a bush in my garden. I don't know if it's got eggs in it yet as I don't want to go poking around to have a look.
While I was dishing up our tea, a jackdaw landed on the fence. Both Mr and Mrs Blackbird went absolutely apeshit about it. They chased the jackdaw away and then spent about five mins strutting about yelling their heads off. Even though they're much smaller birds, they're so fiercely protective.
Best thing I did was add a pond. Makes a huge difference.I'm slowly turning my back garden into a wildlife friendly place. Any new plants I buy have to pollinator approved. I get loads of bees and insects now.

Never heard that before but i assume it has an aftertaste?I've just found out what a Wigan kebab is. I must have led a sheltered life.
I must have led a more sheltered one than you because I’ve never heard of one. Unless I have to take it literally and it actually is a type of roasted meat from Wigan. But somehow I don’t think it is.I've just found out what a Wigan kebab is. I must have led a sheltered life.
My understanding is it’s a pie in a bun.I must have led a more sheltered one than you because I’ve never heard of one. Unless I have to take it literally and it actually is a type of roasted meat from Wigan. But somehow I don’t think it is.

Best thing I did was add a pond. Makes a huge difference.
I'm starting my plans for a pond now, nothing like some water in the garden.I'm thinking about digging a pond. I saw a picture of one with a pebble beach which was good for birds and insects to drink and bathe in. I've got a hanging plate type dish for the birds and a blue tit keeps coming and having a bath in it
I bought one of these and it's in flower now:

It's insane how many bees are busy working on it. Various types of bee and they're all flitting about with pollen stuffed pockets! We call it the buzzy bush now![]()
My next door neighbour has one of those, it's always crawling with bees when in bloom. We call it the 'Marge Simpson Bush'I'm thinking about digging a pond.
