Montserrat Caballé, opera singer, dies at 85

Opera singer Montserrat Caballé, whose duet with Freddie Mercury became the signature song of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, has died aged 85.

She had been suffering from health complaints for some time and was admitted to hospital in Barcelona last month, according to news agency Efe.

Her career spanned 50 years.

She had stints with the Basel Opera and Bremen Opera before her international breakthrough in 1965 in Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall in New York.

She went on to perform with the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and Vienna State Opera, appearing opposite the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.

The song Barcelona was first released in 1987 and later became an anthem for the city's 1992 Olympics.

Not a big fan of opera, but this song with Freddie was amazing - both thrir voices were superb. She couldn't believe that he could reach such high notes, and hold them for so long

Having read his autobiography it seems strange that he couldn't believe he would get to share the stage with such a great opera singer, it seems they were both in awe of each other but produced as near perfection as is possible. Such a sad loss of such great talent...
 
Ray Galton: Steptoe and Son writer dies aged 88

Ray Galton OBE, one of the "fathers and creators of British sitcom", has died aged 88.

In their 1950s-70s heyday he and co-writer Alan Simpson created classics such as Hancock's Half Hour and Steptoe and Son.

And a bonus that they were QPR fans in the series. There are some good writers today but agree back then you had more freedom to be able to write without some sort of yoghurt knitting group moan about it. Regarding the work, it was bloody brilliant!
