My dad used to take me to Wembley quite a bit to watch him and all the others in the heyday of Speedway. Loved the noise and smell. He was one of my favorites..
My parents used to take my brother and i to see the Coventry Bees back in the day Remember a big rivalry between Mauger and Ole Olsen Also used to love smell of the burning grit....... Also remember having cups of coffee in the cold weather and having to turn sideways every time the racers lapped as when they passed the grit flew into the coffee!
I was spoilt for choice in London, my 'local' was Wimbledon which was every Thursday but there was also Hackney on Friday, Wembley on Saturday and West Ham on Monday. Mauger actually taught Olsen to ride speedway and he brought him over to England when they both rode for Newcastle in 67. Olsen proved to be his closest rival in the 70s after Mauger was totally dominant in the late 60s when I first started going to the meetings. I loved the smell of methanol around the stadium very evocative...
don't forget the White City also hosted speedway. Not my kind of sport but Ivan was a household name. May he rest in peace
There were about 14 tracks in London through the late 40s and the 50s but when I first started going in 1968 there were just the four. Now the only track in the London area is Lakeside, shame really but the overheads have seen them all off...
I remember seeing Ivan win the world title at Wembley Stadium and saw him ride for Belle Vue against the Wembley Lions during that era. Fantastic rider without any doubt!! RIP Ivan.
Quite a few years ago...there was a program called Pets Win Prizes. The first series was run by Danny Baker, the second and third by Dale Winton..... For reasons far too complex to explain here, our duck Chris P (duck) appeared on all three series...under different pseudonames obviously (!!!!). With different handlers...so the TV audience would not realise there was only one duck in England..... We got to meet Danny Baker ( cannot really say much nice about him, really up his own...) and Dale Winton. Dale was such a nice man...he was genuinely interested in the animals, he made time to talk to us all. Really engaged with the audience. Nothing was too much trouble for him....It was such a contrast to Danny Baker. The crew also loved him and said he was the easiest person to work with...as he was hard working, and understood how to get the best out of TV.. I have very happy memories of him chatting to us off camera It is so sad he has died because he really was such a real nice person.. RIP Dale[emoji20] Sent from my STF-L09 using Tapatalk
This may not mean a lot to most of you, but DJ Avicii, known for collaberations with Coldplay and Madonna amongst others, with a stringr of hits, has died - only 28! Apparently a big bevvier, has had previous medical issues, but still far too young. DJ Avicii, top electronic dance music artist, dies at 28 - BBC News http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-43841194
Have to say I've never heard of him, but then again probably wouldn't know any of that type of genre. Still far too young...
