Just watching The Shamima Begum story, which seems to have riled up the rabid right wing Mail readers, with many vowing to not pay their licence fee in protest.

Leaving the ****tards aside, it’s actually a brilliant piece of film that features many interviews with Begum herself, as well many of the people involved in what seems to have been a complex situation.
Was she groomed and tricked into travelling to Syria and should be treated as a nieve schoolgirl and victim in the situation ? Or is she an evil bitch who should have her passport revoked and left to rot in some kind of limbo ?
Hard to tell if she’s telling the truth but fascinating none the less

We watched it a few days ago...she contradicts herself a few times, I'd be in no rush to let her return - it would serve as a good deterrant for future if nothing else

Yeah I agree mostly.......there is just still that nagging doubt in my head as to what is the best thing to do.
As the bloke said at the end......would it be better to have her back for our safety, rather than her own.

Started watching the rerun of the original Edge of Darkness series from 1985. Only just remembering how good and powerful it was, a great great piece of television. Bob Peck and Joe Don Baker were truly superb

Just started watching The Lazarus Project that was on Sky a while back….interesting concept that involves fixing disasters back in time that end the world.
Anyone else watch it ?

Sounds interesting. I'm watching Dark at the moment....think it's on Netflix. It's German, so definately pick the subtitled option (I found a link that was dubbed and it was awful). Involves missing children and some headfuck time travel stuff between 2019, 1986 and 1953 but it's really good so far. Has a few similarities to Stranger Things without the monsters, think they came out about the same time.

Is there an episode where we appoint someone other than Hughes or Dedcrapp as manager?

Yeah, we ended up appointing Critchley when he was an unknown ! Things turned out worse than now and we are currently playing in the Isthmian League !

Just on a break after yet another spectacular, horrific and outstanding battle scene that surely must go someway in getting across to people the horror of war and battle. The pure chaos and brutality is stunningly portrayed to people like us, who will never experience that kind of situation.
Interesting to think of the conflict from the German point of view and makes me reflect that although we see “the other side” as just “the enemy”…..every single one of them was someone’s father, someone’s son, someone’s husband or someone’s love….and every death was ****ing tragic.
I’ve never read the book, although seen the other two versions of this movie, but will put it on my list…..if it makes me feel as “anti war” as this movie has….then it’s well worth a read. (Although I have heard the endings in this film differs from the book.
This movie really does deserve an Oscar and if it doesn’t then it’s a travesty.
On another note, and I’m assuming you will anyway, watch in the original German….always better in my opinion.
Let me know what you think…..back to the movie

After last night BAFTA success......I’d just like to say.......I told you so

As I seem to have lots of time on my hands I’ve started watching the back series of Guy Garvey:From the vaults on Sky Arts
Really enjoying the first episode that has unseen and rare interviews and gig footage from the likes of PiL, Echo and The Bunnymen, Dire Straits, Joy Division, The Police, Kate Bush and Sham 69.
Looking at later episodes it showcases the like of The Selecter, The Jam, Boomtown Rats and many, many more.
A great mix of music that probably everyone will find something of interest..

Worth watching

If anyone is visiting France I recommend the restaurant L’entrecote, branches in Nantes, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Montpellier, Lyons (and Barcelona).

This is something of an institution. My mate was aware of it but had never been, discovered there was one down the road from where we were staying in Toulouse, made me run to get there half an hour before it opened…….you can’t book. I was sceptical, but we were already about 25th in the queue. By the time it opened there were another 150 behind us…vast majority local. Fortunately it’s a big place.

There is no choice for your main meal. For €21 you get a small green salad with walnuts and a very nice dressing, seemingly limitless bread and then steak and chips. But brilliant steak and chips, thinly sliced entrecôte (we asked for medium rare, which in French terms is on the rare side for us, fortunately no problem) bathed in an outstanding garlic butter sauce, and a mountain of chips. You get a big platter of steak, and more chips were offered on a regular basis. We also invested in a €19 bottle of house Bordeaux, which was very good. You can get desserts, or a plate of cheese, for €7-8 each, but I was close to explosion by that stage.

When we left the queue was just as big for second sitting. And we walked past on Monday lunchtime…..and there was a queue. Outstanding value, great experience, lovely food.

Also managed several visits to markets where at weekends people seem just to hang out, buying stuff but also snacking on cheese, seafood, sampling wines…..these supplemented by duck, melted cheese and mushroom galette one evening and the inevitable cassoulet on Sunday. This is very tasty but I’m still digesting it.

I haven’t spent much time in France, except for Paris, for a long time, but this was great, but dangerous. The delicious but rich food, obviously good wines, and requirement for thirst quenching beer are definitely health threatening without self control, which I abandon on holidays. It’s also expensive - €5-7 for a pint, you can get a glass of wine for €2.5, but more frequently a bit more even in the markets.

This morning I had a fine slab of Cadburys dairy milk chocolate for breakfast….an unassuming vintage which hit the pallet with just the right note and texture of its type that sat swimmingly on the tongue until easing its way down in chocolaty abandon.
A bargain at £2.29 from Tesco Extra

Anyone planning on spending a few days in Inverurie? Yes, that well known town hidden on the outskirts of Aberdeen.....fully recommend an evening filling yourself with cheap booze at the Gordon Highlander Ale House (Brew Dog Hazy Jane 660ml for about £4, loopy juice) and then staggering across the road to the Rajpoot Indian Restaurant. Service with a smile and a damn good curry - had the Rashun Bhuna....suffice to say there won't be many vampires knocking on my door for the next few days <laugh> hoaching with garlic and coriander, an absolute feast.. one of the best curries I've had for a long time, and far far better than the drivel I was served last week in Peterhead (****hole) - fabulous, and I'm here another night, result <cheers>

Now you tell me… I’m just coming to the end of three days in Westhill!
