Just had a look at the McArthur foul on Saka. It was a deliberate kick. It doesn’t, IMO, even register as a late or poor challenge because he wasn’t in a position to challenge for the ball without going through Saka.
I suffered a broken fibula from a less severe kick than that, when I was 17 years old, when my weight was fully on my left leg - ref didn’t even give me a free kick - and to put it into context had Saka’s foot been unable to lift from the turf, during the contact, he too could have ended up with a broken fibula.
I know red cards can be reduced to yellow, post match. Does it work the other way, or does the failure of the VAR officials to bring it to the match ref’s attention mean the end of it?
As I understand it, if the ref has taken action in real time and VAR hasn’t changed it from yellow to red, that’s the end of the story.

There's a bit of chatter in the papers this morning about Newcastle going for Zaha and Ward-Prowse in the January window.

Now obviously it's just chatter (though it was in The Times, so possibly not 'loose' chatter, but would suspect informed guessing).

Question is, if Newcastle came in with a nuts bid, let's call it £70m. Are you happy to thank James for his service and let him go?

It's a hypothetical scenario that is very unlikely to happen but we couldn't turn down that kind of silly money as long as we have time to reinvest it that is.

Hell, yeah.

Looks like Eddie Howe is close to the Newcastle job. Great opportunity for him but not without risk - they are pretty crap and there is no guarantee they will buy their way out of trouble with just 1 transfer window.

I thought he hated living in the north last time he went there. Granted Newcastle is very different to Burnley but still

This is complete bullshit talking about Newcastle competing for European places. The best players will still go to United, City, Liverpool, Chelsea and the top continental sides long before they consider "The Toon." Over time they might reach the Spurs level.

We usually agree with each other on most things Ides :emoticon-0136-giggl, but in this case you seem to have under estimated footballer's need for greed and money talks. Remember Blackburn?
Utd, City and the rest will still get big names but when players see what Newcastle are offering they'll be up there before you can say "It's always been a dream of mine to play for the Toon".

Newcastle are arguably an historically bigger club than Chelsea and Citeh were before their massive investment and there's is no reason why they can't become as successful as them in a couple of seasons.

Agreed. However, I think it’ll be a little harder now that say 10-15 years ago. Will require some shrewd CEO management & ****e loads of investment. 5 years minimum I’d say. Btw, I’m sort of loving the club fall out over this. Probably won’t help SFC but think we’re already a bit up ****e creek & without that life saving paddle & can’t see anything/ much changing even if we get a new owner.

Yes there is - there are more top teams in the PL now then there were back then. Liverpool weren't as good, teams like Everton and Spurs were bottom half. The PL is far more competitive now than it was back then.

Oh absolutely. I am staggered stuff like this isn’t reviewed in detail as part of a performance review for refs

they seem completely unaccountable

Hopefully Ralph can use last night’s incident at his hearing.
Had VAR told Dean to review the foul, he would probably have had to change his decision from yellow to red.
I think is the point Ralph was making when he said that he knew that JWP’s card would become a red once the VAR official (Dean?) referred the ref to the screen and that it wasn’t an attack on the ref’s integrity.

Yes it is more the inconsistency of the VAR application that is the problem. I don’t fully blame Dean on this one as he is a human and watching things in real time
