Don't let a few facts get in the way of a general whinge......... seeing she's only 42 years old and after leaving India spent many years in the States where she met Sunak and apparently lived in India for a number of years after marrying Sunak....... they came to the UK around 2013 or 2014.........

So she's only been here at most 9 or 10 years, less than a quarter of her life........ In the circumstances it's not unreasonable for her to consider her home is India......

Maybe her Domicile status should be looked at, but then again it's reported that 10% of London's population are also Non Domiciled, so HMRC will be busy looking into each and every case.........

yea they probably should. I don't know about you trammers, but if i've bought a house and lived in it for 9 years, i'm pretty sure that would be my "home".

Hell this flat i live in right no that i've been living in for 6 years is my home (not the one i grew up in for 18 years).

Anyway, do i really care, not really as in the grand scheme of things the tax that she will have to pay is trivial compared to what the government spends so has no affect on the tax i will have to pay. If it helps towards changing the non-dom rules that would be great but my spider senses tell me nothing will happen. Just like most things, i'll keep an interest but in reality non of this really affects my day to day so whatever happens i won't stress too much about it

Problem is the government have created a situation, where they are forcibly putting every UK citizen in debt by £200. I don't want it, but I don't have a choice, so Mr Sunak cannot be surprised when those very same citizens scrutinise the finances of his private life.

The Chancellor makes a point of not wanting to help non working claimants of Universal Credit or disability benefits, so yeah his Mrs is getting ripped on her finances, because the public wish to understand how much they do actually understand about poverty.

Clearly looking at his wealth and that of his wife, they won't be struggling this winter, so salty Rishi tears, wins no votes with me.

lol when did you come over here brb?

Sshhh...you haven't seen me bobby and don't tell then I vote Tory. :cheesy:

lol, why are you looking for politics mate, you got rid of all that further up :P. welcome to this board though, it's actually a pretty good board and representative on the whole from all spectrums for the most part. there are both tories and lefties as well as some more rogue elements (staines) but it's pretty good

I might be going against the grain here, but lately the term "wealthy" seems to be a dirty word, there seems to be an awful lot of dislike towards people who are wealthy, the latest being Sunak and his wealthy wife........

Contrary to what the Champagne Socialist Emily Thornbury said this morning, it is not about Sunak's wife's residency status it's about her Non Domicile Status and it's the UK HMRC who determine whether or not a person is Domiciled or Non Domiciled. Presumably she is what is termed "Resident/Ordinarily Resident" in the UK for Tax purposes, meaning she pays tax on all her UK income and being Non Dom she'll pay UK tax on any Froreign Income she remits into the UK. If that income has been taxed overseas and there is a double taxation agreement between the UK and the other Country then a tax credit is applied for any tax paid......

Non Dom is a complicated concept..... this is from the UK HMRC Website....

Working out your domicile
Your domicile’s usually the country your father considered his permanent home when you were born. It may have changed if you moved abroad and you do not intend to return.

If she considers that India is and will remain her "permanent" home and she intends to return there in the future there is no real reason for her not to be Non Dom.......

However much others view it as wrong she and HMRC are the only ones who can decide her Domicile status and as far as I can see she's not done anything wrong....

As I said earlier there is nothing wrong with a person being wealthy, especially one who's self made wealthy.......

She's taking the piss, mate. Perhaps the Chancellor of the Exchequer should be asked to adjudicate on her status. Oh, wait a minute...

Apparently, up until a couple of years ago, both she and Little Rishi had Green Cards signifying that they were permanent residents in the US.

But Diane Abbott....

I don't even know how I ended up here lol...think I was on live activity, and something Trammers said caught my eye, I did think he was right in someways, but I fancied playing devils advocate for a few seconds....anyway, I'm off now, before all the riff raff follow me here.

to be fair, she's done the right thing here in changing her status and good on her.

If it had been a couple of other tories, they'd have just feigned ignorance to the public outrage and ignored the story and let it all go away in a few weeks time

Nah, it's down to HMRC to adjudicate on Domicile, nowt to do with her husband as well you know........

Agree that they were both rather stupid not to renounce the "Green Card" thingy once they moved from the States even though they were in India for a number of years before settling in the UK......... Even more so once he became an MP and then Chancellor.........

Also don't disagree with Ubes about perception, however it's still her right to have had the Non Dom status, the days of the wife being a chattel of the husband have long gone in the tax system......... Presumably the tax she pays in India on her dividends goes towards funding public services there..........

Havent done the research and dont plan to but i read on another forum she pays her tax in mauritius which is free of dividend tax.

Okay i just looked it up, just skimmed it but theres a company out there that she owns which owns some business (may not have the infosys shares to be fair). I don't think anyone will be able to know where she pays her tax on the infosys dividends she collects.

So if I move back but say I going back to nz I could be a non Dom
What are the benefits of being a non Dom other than not paying UK tax on money not earned in the UK
If bob rents out his holiday home does he pay tax twice or just in Portugal

Stop being the accountant and consider what's right, mate.

Apparently the bad guys have fired missiles into a train station full of the woman and children of the slightly less bad guys

So who has released all this info about Sunak and his wife.

It seems they hasn't done anything wrong.

Starmer is a careful, perhaps over cautious lawyer, would know that...and so has been quite measured in his response.

Boris saying to camera, we should not be attacking a politicians (Sunak) wife

This is a blue on blue attack isn't it.

That’d be my guess. Rumours straight out of number 10. He’s not the Tory they are looking for.
