I didn't realise that we have one of the highest minimum wages in Europe, already. It's higher than France and Germany.I honestly thought the £15 an hour thing was a case of aim high/ accept less (I could be wrong).
What do you think is a reasonable minimum wage ? Personally about the £11-£12 area for me would be about right.
Anyone noticed that every Tory giving a political interview this weekend has talked about the need to give Britain a pay rise?
Perhaps I'm over extrapolating, but sounds a lot to me like softening the ground for a big announcement from Boris on Wednesday. Bet he'll make a big announcement on a big minimum wage increase. Completely parking his tank on Labour's lawn again, which is straight from his playbook.
I don't think you have been paying attention. One of the main reasons for people voting to leave was because cheap foreign labour had started to drive down the wages in this country. Industries such as farming have been getting away for too long importing these workers from the EU and paying less than the minimum wage. HGV drivers were being paid as little as £9 and £10 per hour. These companies are now realising that they can't get away with this and are having to pay British workers proper wages, which they don't want to do. It's a bit of a stand-off now but the companies will simply have to bite the bullet, dry their eyes and cough up.They've hit upon a largely unexpected impact of Brexit - labour shortages leading to increased wages - and are pretending that that was what they wanted all along, which is plainly bollocks.

Labour shortages was absolutely an expected impact of Brexit.
Wouldn’t surprise me. A wage of £4.62 ph for a 16-17 year old is nothing more than slave labour.

Well, it is, err, £4.62 ph more than slave labourBut I know what you meant really, and agree with you.
If this was the plan all along, why are we begging the foreign workers to come back? We've recently been flying fruit-pickers in from Barbados, Nepal and the Philippines, and now they're desperately trying to get EU lorry drivers back. We''ll be buying our Christmas turkeys from France and Poland because farmers here can't get workers for their farms. It's not so much about cheap labour as available labour. We don't have enough people to do the jobs.
British workers getting paid more is welcome, but we're going to very soon see prices rising faster than wages. Rampant inflation is just around the corner, just as the government is cutting Universal Credit by £20 a week. The poorest will be hit hardest as always.

Who’s gonna serve your coffee in Pret ?
That's a good one, well done.

It's what a lot of Brexit voters wanted.
Don't worry, bad pedantry gag.
