Yep sounds like a good candidate for an Express column. “The leftie who saw the light”.
He has a Jewish background. That has relevance here

I read Austin was so well respected on the Labour benches his colleagues were yelling at him to go and join the other side, recently I think. He's a K***I'm unsure as to what reasons Ken Clarke has given to not voting Tory. Didnt he vote for the withdrawal agreement? I may be mistaken. I've seriously never heard of the other guy. What he says are again just opinions and slogans. Why will he wreck the economy? Why is he not fit to be leader? A bit of substance wouldnt go a miss.
But didn't he vote for May's withdrawal agreement 3 f***** times? No, Clarke voted for the Benn Act and lost the Tory whip with 20 others.
I think you will be hearing more from Ian Austin in due course. I suspect the media will be all over him like a rash.
It really doesn’t.
Don't see it myself. Clumsy language, yes. But what he was focusing on was what should have been done with the benefit of hindsight. Get out of a burning building at the earliest opportunity. Again, with hindsight, the advice the Fire Service gave could not have been more wrong

Sorry goldy im going to have to disagree with this. Its appalling, most people listen to the experts (and expect it to be correct). Rees mogg is a twat for coming out with this.
You mean to say he's no more sensitive to the antisemitism in the Labour Party than a non-Jewish person?
It's made entirely with the benefit of hindsight, Nines. It's not a criticism of the Fire Service. They do not have second sight. But knowing what we do now, an evacuation of the building at the earliest moment must surely have been the best option.
I mean to say that’s not what’s driven his slightly bizarre outburst. If you really want to denounce racism you don’t tell people to back Boris Johnson. This is a personal feud with Corbyn.
No problem, Bobby. I've listened to the excerpt again. He says the problem was the cladding and the stay put policy. If you ignore what you're told and leave, you are so much safer. It's common sense etc.
I still think he is looking ahead to future problems. He is certainly not criticising those that stayed and died, but his language was clumsy. But you can tell, listening to him, he is agonising over the whole issue. I thought the Bridgen quote was worse, it was arrogant.
Who knows all the heat blowing up the stairs, the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide and anyone else who will faint. The best policy might be to stay put provided your building isnt isnt surrounded by cladding that helps the building go up in flames.
Wasnt there that fire in japan where the advice and action was to go onto the roof?
Yes, I believe he did, perhaps because May was a Remainer. But Boris is too close to the ERG, and Ken would rather walk away and revoke Article 50. It's not incredibly newsworthy.
That's what I thoughtBut didn't he vote for May's withdrawal agreement 3 f***** times?
As far as I'm aware the stay-put policy is still in place but is consistently re-evaluated. Read the article I'm going to post in response to Stainsey's post Kiwi.
Here's the article mate and explains the dilemma that the fire and other emergency services were confronted with on that night ...

Exactly the point Abbott was making! Biased media coverage! He is the"Father of the House"! Grandad more likely. Unlike Austin he is well respected. And always struck me as a very loyal Tory. He's been Tory Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary, and now he's no longer going to vote for his own party! That says a lot. Far more newsworthy than someone who has a career at odds with his fellow MP's. He never could play football either.

I'm not sure if clarke ever voted for article 50 in the first place to be fair to him. As for not being on the front of the papers, that is exactly the point Abbott is making ffs.Clarke has been a Europhile for years and years. He is a leading Remainer. Everyone knew he was struggling. And finally he admits he want to revoke Article 50 and Remain. He's retiring and won't vote for Boris. If this was put on the front page of a newspaper, it wouldn't sell.
But Austin was a Labour MP until earlier this year, who has been working class all his life, and is saying that Corbyn is so unfit to be leader, that Austin has no alternative but to recommend to Labour voters that they vote...for Boris Johnson! That is huge, and the feeling is, he won't be the last...
Find me a Tory leaving MP that recommends to Tory voters they give their vote to Jeremy Corbyn!
