There's going to be more fudge going on over this than in a Cadbury's factory, and when Boris makes these statements, he is fully aware they are the UK's opening position in forthcoming talks with the EU.

Boris has one eye on the EU negotiations. So he cannot be seen to say in public - yes, the EU may force us to have barriers across the Irish Sea. The EU are doing the same thing by demanding we comply with all EU regulations, submit to the ECJ and allow EU fishing boats into our sovereign waters.

I think when Boris said there would be no trade barriers in the Irish Sea i.e. between N Ireland and the rest of the UK, it had the same status as the "dying in a ditch" pledge re an extension. Most people knew it was bluster and had to happen. The Unionists won't like the current proposals even though barriers will be kept to a minimum. Expect there to be some financial inducement coming from Westminster (not the first) to sweeten the pill.

It is difficult to differentiate, and I wouldn't trust the guy in any personal dealings I had with him. But the fact is, the N Ireland situation was always going to be one of the key issues in the Brexit negotiations with the EU, and anything other than what he actually said would have been seized on by the opposition as a sign of weakness. That, Bob and Bobby, is realpolik.

I'd rather have a guy who plays fast and loose with the truth on THIS issue in order not to give away a vital negotiating position, than have Goody Twoshoes who shows the world what cards he holds and gets dry-butt ****ed by Monsier Barnier.

Of course, ultimately, this kind of strategy may be Boris's undoing with the electorate. But on this issue, I don't think he'll lose many votes so long as he makes a success of the talks with the EU

The trouble with this line of thinking [and credit for at least trying to defend the indefensible] is that no one had any sympathy for any solutions to this 'intractable problem' when May was prime minister, to the extent that they voted down her deal and got rid of her. Brexiteers were instead demanding the implementation of some sort of mythical technology at the border with ROI which doesn't exist.

Let's face it, realpolitik or not, he lied through his teeth to get his deal through and the election result he wanted, and there will be zero consequences.

Failing that just say it’s a great deal and shout down anyone who points out a flaw as unpatriotic or unable to get over Remain losing.

I sort of respect the honesty of this position (on your part, not Boris'), but obviously the very fact he needed to lie about it would indicate not everyone had/has the same laissez faire attitude about the issue that you (and perhaps many others) have. I guess it was a calculated lie to get the majority, after which he has the numbers to not worry about keeping up the pretence.
