I sort of respect the honesty of this position (on your part, not Boris'), but obviously the very fact he needed to lie about it would indicate not everyone had/has the same laissez faire attitude about the issue that you (and perhaps many others) have. I guess it was a calculated lie to get the majority, after which he has the numbers to not worry about keeping up the pretence.

I think that’s right, but it was such an obvious lie because no one really believed he could magic up a solution that no one else had seen. He did it with most of his focus on the EU, just as he did when he said we wouldn’t extend the leave deadline in 2019. People stopped taking him literally because they knew he would have to extend. When he did, the media criticised him, but the majority of the electorate credited him for trying.

I'd rather have a guy who plays fast and loose with the truth on THIS issue in order not to give away a vital negotiating position, than have Goody Twoshoes who shows the world what cards he holds and gets dry-butt ****ed by Monsier Barnier.

Of course, ultimately, this kind of strategy may be Boris's undoing with the electorate. But on this issue, I don't think he'll lose many votes so long as he makes a success of the talks with the EU

Yeah that’ll work <laugh> trade and business works through deception and lack of trust. Not good relations and understanding needs <doh>

Nobody will believe him when he tries to suggest the uk’s position is strong as he’s made it obvious he’s full of **** and bluster. Reputation is paramount in any business and Boris is absolutely destroying the uks.

It is difficult to differentiate, and I wouldn't trust the guy in any personal dealings I had with him. But the fact is, the N Ireland situation was always going to be one of the key issues in the Brexit negotiations with the EU, and anything other than what he actually said would have been seized on by the opposition as a sign of weakness. That, Bob and Bobby, is realpolik.

Yes my dear goldie... now if this was his only lie then i would say he's done well to keep his cards close.

in any case, how come he's come out with the truth now we haven't even finished negotiating (have we even begun?). It seems more like it was to oust May than because he was playing a blinder poker game

Everything Johnson
May had bigger problems than NI. She and her team were seen as weak negotiators. I doubt there will be many consequences for Boris on this, I agree. As Steel says, he doesn’t have many votes to lose in NI. And plenty to gain if he pulls off a good deal with the EU
I'm under no illusions that 'no deal' was always and still is the preferred option for this government.

I guess that's they key point right? Promised 31 October, failed. Promised no NI / GB border failed. Promising a great deal for the UK ... let's see, but there should be no great surprise when he rows back on that too.

Spot on Goldie she went because she was weak. Some people just do not understand how politics or political language works.

We want a deal and the red lines appear to be no EU regulatory control or judicial oversight and no encroachment into fishing waters

Yeah she should have just lied and kicked the cab down the road a bit more. That’s the strength of leadership we demand.
Watford all this lies/lying/lair is comical. It’s how politicians say things or don’t that you need to understand. We all knew about the customs check with NI. I can’t remember who on here said it would be impossible not to have checks. I also remember back then posters accusing Boris of lying so why all the outrage now? Goldie is spot on. If we get a good deal with the EU he will be a hero. I believe he will because his Premiership relies on it. His majority as you say are brexitiers won’t stand for a crap deal.

No one trusted China yet it had become an economic powerhouse before the virus

What utter condescending bollocks. The ****ing language ffs. The fat mop **** is a liar who has been regularly sacked for lying. He’ll come back waving a bit of paper like Chamberlain and sycophants all over the country will convince themselves it’s a great deal that is somehow better than what we had because the alternative is admitting they’ve been duped. The retort will be that we’re rubbishing the great deal because we hate Johnson/Brexit/Tories.

He needs to pay his backers back after all so no crying off with a doctor’s note for at least a few years.

Everyone is painfully used to him already thanks to his shambolic handling of Corona. Congratulations on the win.

If Boris is Chamberlain, what does that make the German led EU?!
