Call it what you like, everyone knew it was an intractable problem if barrier's were not to be created within Ireland itself. There's going to be more fudge going on over this than in a Cadbury's factory, and when Boris makes these statements, he is fully aware they are the UK's opening position in forthcoming talks with the EU.
I call it what it exactly is. You choose to call it what you like. So you say lies are the UK's opening position?
Boris has one eye on the EU negotiations. So he cannot be seen to say in public - yes, the EU may force us to have barriers across the Irish Sea. The EU are doing the same thing by demanding we comply with all EU regulations, submit to the ECJ and allow EU fishing boats into our sovereign waters. So, yes, those statements Boris made were deceptive. But anyone who did not view them with a shovelful of salt is naive
On that note, do you agree that everything Boris johnson says should be taken with at the very least, a shovel full of salt? How do you ever differentiate? What an absolute load of croc Goldy. You're much better than this. This is Ellers standard ffs.
you surprise me goldie coming out with that. and we wonder why politicians lie to us all the time....
Anyone that believes anything that comes out of that man's mouth is more than naive, they're a ****ing idiot. He's a disgrace.
So basically what we have established Tory supporters just don’t care if they are flat out lied to, how can you vote for a party when you can’t believe what they are promising?
It is difficult to differentiate, and I wouldn't trust the guy in any personal dealings I had with him. But the fact is, the N Ireland situation was always going to be one of the key issues in the Brexit negotiations with the EU, and anything other than what he actually said would have been seized on by the opposition as a sign of weakness. That, Bob and Bobby, is realpolik.
I'd rather have a guy who plays fast and loose with the truth on THIS issue in order not to give away a vital negotiating position, than have Goody Twoshoes who shows the world what cards he holds and gets dry-butt ****ed by Monsier Barnier. Of course, ultimately, this kind of strategy may be Boris's undoing with the electorate. But on this issue, I don't think he'll lose many votes so long as he makes a success of the talks with the EU
He never gets any votes in NI to lose though, so he's not giving a **** about the electorate over there
The trouble with this line of thinking [and credit for at least trying to defend the indefensible] is that no one had any sympathy for any solutions to this 'intractable problem' when May was prime minister, to the extent that they voted down her deal and got rid of her. Brexiteers were instead demanding the implementation of some sort of mythical technology at the border with ROI which doesn't exist. Let's face it, realpolitik or not, he lied through his teeth to get his deal through and the election result he wanted, and there will be zero consequences.
May had bigger problems than NI. She and her team were seen as weak negotiators. I doubt there will be many consequences for Boris on this, I agree. As Steel says, he doesn’t have many votes to lose in NI. And plenty to gain if he pulls off a good deal with the EU
Failing that just say it’s a great deal and shout down anyone who points out a flaw as unpatriotic or unable to get over Remain losing.
I sort of respect the honesty of this position (on your part, not Boris'), but obviously the very fact he needed to lie about it would indicate not everyone had/has the same laissez faire attitude about the issue that you (and perhaps many others) have. I guess it was a calculated lie to get the majority, after which he has the numbers to not worry about keeping up the pretence.
