The A167 through Birtley is a wide road with enough capacity for the volume of traffic including heavy goods vehicles who use it. A while back, Gateshead Council put a 20mph speed limit on it. Since then, Greenford Lane which goes through Ouston has had increased traffic levels including heavy goods vehicles. This road isn't designed for the volume of traffic, serious congestion occurs in rush hour, we've had more accidents and children have problems crossing the road at school drop off and pick up times.
The parish council has been pushing Durham County Council for years to install better traffic calming measures to try and tackle this. Funding had been granted before the recent councillor elections in May but the work hadn't been carried out.
Reform have now cancelled the traffic calming measures for absolutely no reason whatsoever. The money allocated to the work will be returned to Durham County Council instead.

Well done Reform!
