One of the few ex politicians using their status for real good. I liked Brown. He was capable. Arguably the last chancellor who was sufficiently capable to do the role. I did think he made some poor mistakes though. Mistakes that have a legacy even now. PIF being one that has always annoyed me.
Agree with most of that. All I would say Labour inherited hospitals and schools that were literally falling to bits in 1997. Something had to be done quickly to get them to a decent standard. Was PIF perfect? Far from but it enabled the massive reduction in nhs waiting lists and people dint have to wait years (in many cases) in pain. Record shortest nhs waiting times on the last labour governments watch.
From the poster who is happy to let kids go hungry. The tories are the experts in killing pensioners, 23,000 on their last watch. The ‘left’ brought in the WFA last time. The Tories must have been cruel bastards the time before last then and any pensioner on £35k a year will die of stupidity not the cold. I take it you don’t listen to radio? Nearly ever other advert is the government encouraging pensioners to apply for pension credits to boost their income. The Labour bsstards. If you know any cold pensioners encourage them to apply, it’s a fairly easy process. Still wanting kids to go hungry mate? That’s not politics it’s the actions of someone who has little humanity. I need no lectures from you.
The A167 through Birtley is a wide road with enough capacity for the volume of traffic including heavy goods vehicles who use it. A while back, Gateshead Council put a 20mph speed limit on it. Since then, Greenford Lane which goes through Ouston has had increased traffic levels including heavy goods vehicles. This road isn't designed for the volume of traffic, serious congestion occurs in rush hour, we've had more accidents and children have problems crossing the road at school drop off and pick up times. The parish council has been pushing Durham County Council for years to install better traffic calming measures to try and tackle this. Funding had been granted before the recent councillor elections in May but the work hadn't been carried out. Reform have now cancelled the traffic calming measures for absolutely no reason whatsoever. The money allocated to the work will be returned to Durham County Council instead. https://www.facebook.com/oustonpari...Ebq4Z36eWhvAx5n5vqBfmUGjNE4Cdvo7kmNHDxQBXnJ2l Well done Reform!
When there only policies are stopping the boats and slashing public services this is the consequence sadly. You can argue they are delivering on what they were elected to do, at the behest of their wealthy backers, to cut spending. Given the fantastic regeneration of Sunderland all we can hope is the good people of Sunderland aren’t as daft as a lot of people in County Durham and put this fantastic regeneration at risk next year by electing these racist charlatans
Just when Sunderland is starting to show well deserved pride in itself these jokers show up threatening to ruin it all … … the city is far removed from mass illegal immigration but Farage’s lies seem to impress some of the locals. All very weird.
I was in Sunderland this week with work and had a good look around south side and it’s really taking shape…the new park will be fantastic and link the regeneration on both sides of the river together when complete. Those responsible deserve a lot of credit - well done Sunderland Council. You just have to hope people look beyond immigration (which farage is largely responsible for anyway and which Labour are now putting proper resources into border force to tackle) and vote for the party who is going to improve their city. People need to think on about the local Tories who told the Tory government not to invest £25m into the Sunderland regeneration. Jeremy Hunt as chancellor, however, deserves a lot of credit for ignoring the local Tories and committing the money.
Did you have issues on road before speed change, if not surely it should be well done labour for creating the issue in the first place when there was no issue
So the Tory government put the money in Sunderland, well done tories, what happened before under last labour government, oh yes all money funnelled into Newcastle aided by the Sunderland labour council at the time

PIF was used far more than in hospitals. It has been a legacy for years and years that is not good at all. I worked with a local lesiure centre that struggled to thanks to covid. They had an old PIF deal which was disastrous. It had a short term impact, but a long term impact too. The long term was a contract that hamstrung it. By the end to centre was run into the ground. PIF was a Lamont initiative. The tories wanted to open that can of worms. I dont think anyone anticipated it would become so widespread.
I praised the Tory government- can you read? It’s the local Tories that were a disgrace. The Labour government have also invested a further £25m recently I believe. I agree with you to a point re the history and of course Sunderland did not get its fair share of regeneration monies. As example the millennium funding was chaired by sir John Hall and Newcastle got its millennium bridge and teeside got funding (for the Stockton regeneration I think) but Sunderland got nowt. The same John hall who has been a massive benefactor to the Tories over the years and now backing Reform. The TWDC did a massive disservice to Sunderland but was an unelected quango set up by…. The Tory party. However, to give it some credit it flattened monkwearmouth pit to pave the way for the SOL and I think sir bob was complimentary of their input into the SOL as an outsider looking in who loves this city I hope Sunderland people don’t put it at risk by voting for a racist party whose leaders wouldn’t piss on working class Sunderland people if they were on fire
