I wish Root would rotate the strike a bit more. He seems to be getting himself in a rut again. 100-0 would be lovely

WICKET - Root b Harris 2 (Eng 17-1)

Bowled him! How on earth do you play that? Joe Root is done by an absolute trimmer from Ryan Harris. Angling in, pitching on off and straightening to take the top of off. Remember the ball James Anderson bowled to do for Michael Clarke at Trent Bridge? This was every bit as good. Maybe Root could have been further forward, but we would be being hyper-critical. Australia strike.

I'm starting to get disillusioned with Joe Root, that's 7 out 8 failures since he's been opening.
Take away the 180 and his record is abysmal.

IMHO they should be Compton a chance.

Looked good down the order. I thought it was a big ask to put him up to opener for his first Ashes in English conditions. Not many opening batsmen do that well in England. Cook has certainly had issues on off stump here. Smith for SA seemed to be able enjoy it. I think no you've gone with Root, you have to give him time. Saying that, give it 2-3 years and I think his club mate Alex Lees will put him under pressure.

We lack a Trescothick, someone who can give it a bit of coco and get us going forward quickly. I can't many openers around who can do that role. Certainly Compton is another turgid watch.

I could always come out of retirement.

That's cricket. You struggle for runs and get a nigh on unplayable beauty whilst on two.

I think Root needs to go back down the order and work on the opening skills he needs at this level. He's a cracking player, and has time on his side. In the future I see him as England's number 3.

Patience the key now. Ball is 30 overs old. It has gone really soft in every innings so far after 40. We need to bat long. We must not forget that may not be overly troubled by this wicket either. It is not a minefield. They'll likely bat with plenty of time left in the game. I'd want 250 plus for them to aim at.

This always happens at Durham, bit of rain, pitch juices up. They'd do well to just see a few overs off after that shower.

Put 1 pound on Trott to be top scorer, 50p on Bell, and 50p on Bell scoring a century... Possibility of still winning a fiver. That's right chaps, betting master is in the house <laugh>
