On the point of joining up it is worth looking at uni entrants. In 21 it was the biggest ever number to enter a nursing degree, maybe all allied health degrees. That was felt to be the pandemic effect, and the huge level of support for the NHS across the country. In 22 there was a year on year drop of around 8% I think it was.
I believe I am right in saying nursing students get significant financial support whilst studying. These are in the form of bursaries they dont have to pay back. I think it is around £5k a year. Might also apply to other medical courses too, not sure. They still have tuition fees like everyone else, but can get the loan like everyone else and pay back once they earn a certain amount. Compared with other professions it is an attractive degree to take on, and I am happy it is personally.
I would go much further for nurses in particular. I would make their tuition fee loan non-repayable, so long as they stay in the profession, or a related profession earning the same level of pay. It wouldnt be right for them to get a free degree, then cross train to earn double the money. It might be one way of attracting students to nursing and keeping them. I will write to my MP about this I think.
Anyway, none of this helps those in the profession now. Hope they get a deal that is worthwhile for them soon.
