Surely if you record all births and deaths then add in the balance of all those entering and leaving the country you have the total population and with the technology available to HMG they will know this almost to the minute. All the other information is available to them through council tax records and the stuff that HMRC gathers along with the DSS.

So why do we all need to wade through a 30 page form, with the threat of a heafty fine, if we don't tell the government if we have guests on a certain day?

Evening, Oxford <ok>. I will point this memory out to a friend of mine who grew up with Tommy Harmer as a personal friend. He'd been telling me for years about this old footballer for Spurs he grew up knowing, and one night, leaving the ground with my godfather and Dad behind me, I suddenly heard them talking about Tommy Harmer.

"What?!!" I said. "Did Tommy Harmer play for Watford?"
The septuagenarians looked back at me in despair. "Of course!" Then they carried on with their reminiscences. I then made their jaws drop further when I nonchalantly interrupted them again with:
"My mate's good pals with him, known him all his life." I kept walking...

Tommy Harmer was brought into the Watford team as a replacement for Barry Hartle. Both of them were small, indeed seemed to not be suited to a rugged game with a heavy leather ball.

Tommy was getting on a bit and his best days were behind him and for that reason I always felt that we had lost the better player. Looking at the respective records Tommy could claim far more to his career than Barry, but then I probably never watched him when he was at his best.

Both Mme and me had to complete a French census form earlier this year. The officer who came and waited while we filled them in seemed very nervous until he discovered that we could both understand him and the forms. There is not one day here when they must be completed, the whole month of February is good enough.

Both sides of the two forms had to be written on, though we were spared some of the questions having not been born or married in the country. However the general tone of it was that if we refused to answer a hefty fine would follow.

The morning is dull but mild. The light is poor. Not the sort of day to spring into life.:(

Back to a couple of hours in the classroom. Not really good as a start to the week.:emoticon-0114-dull:

i have to stick to speed limits, otherwise i get struck off lol...and yes, it's dull! Speed limits take all the fun out of driving, but at least people don't die so much! Nerves of steel? I'm not sure...i'm just often glad i have dual controls lol

I recommend a trip to any Indian city folks.... i used to drive in North India which was just bearable.

But after 10 days in Bhopal.... I was NEVER bored...... fair to say never a dull moment.

On Indian roundabouts there is no right of way or seemingly correct way to go round them. So combine, cows, people, bikes. hundreds of scooters, cars, lorries, water buffalo, tuk tuk taxis, jeeps, dogs.. and you have it all... no exaggeration

coupled with the fact that no one wears seat belt or crash helmets... well
    the accidents HAPPEN!

Stay clear of Milton Keynes then.....I quite like roundabouts, they keep the traffic flowing.

You beat me to it W_Y - people should be invited to spend a day on the roads in MK - then they would never have to worry about the occasional roundabout
    again

BBW - early Monday morning - sounds like a planned resignation rather than - I snapped :) - Got something else to go to?

    Good luck whatever
