I was back over home last week and had a round at Matfen Hall, a course i've always considered my favourite. Sadly it was a huge let down, the fairways and greens were awful. admittedly i understand there's been a lot a rain in the north east. but the state of the course was virtually unplayable, really not sure why it was open....then again, for the green fees I suppose I do

Lots of courses are struggling with the winter weather and excess rainfall. I'm finding the coastal courses much better at the minute.

Anyone see the golf?....not sure if i've seen faster green than that for a Majors...guess it underlines how good Fowler and Schauffele played

I agree about the greens and love all the risk and reward holes, missed the 2nd half of the draw, and will catch up this morning.

Following the weather lately, all greens are becoming like the Masters.

Yesterday I had a longish gentle downhill putt, I swear the ball all but stopped level with hole. Then it was as if the weight of the ball itself took over and I de-greened! From now onwards our greens are usually fast but its getting ridiculous. Although because of some irrigation problems the greenkeepers are going to let the grass grow slightly.

Fairways are yielding long runs and you cannot chip onto the greens cos the ball runs off.

The Open starts on Thursday and with his win at the Scottish Open, Mcllroy has to start favourite. That said, there has only ever been one Open Champion that had won the Scottish Open the week previous (Phil Mickleson 2013). I watched the majority of the final round on Sunday and was impressed by him (and many others) but his second shot to 18, with a 2 iron, under the wind to 10 feet was sublime. Thoughts? Who will your bets be on this week?

Also to note (nothing to do with Golf ) but we have the fourth Ashes Test and the the final week in the mountains of the Tour de France

Thinking about the recent thunder and lightning weather, a Travino quote

You are quite safe raising a one iron on a golf course, as not even God can hit a one iron!
Not bragging or anything but as a younger man I hit a 1 iron off anything other than par 5. It just went straight! I have never adapted to hybrid woods so still have a driving iron in the bag, but not strong enough anymore to make it a regular tee club.

I prefer a hybrid 2 iron to a 3 wood.
