In the trial he said that he told Sunderland what happened and they have copies of all the messages that he sent as well as the police interviews http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...for-allowing-adam-johnson-to-continue-playingThey cancelled his contract as soon as he admitted guilt at the start of the trial, he knew he'd get sacked if he told them he was going to do that, so he milked a few more weeks/months wages out of them before the trial started.
Sunderland did everything fairly and quickly when they found out the truth imo, no stain on them.
It is looking like they knew everything but cleared him anyway.
