England's problem hasnt been they have produced the players in recent years its they cant get them to fit into a team

David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Ashley Cole I would have regarded as world class players at some point during their career

... of those only Rooney (maybe Rio) can actually dribble ... Owen had tremendous pace ... Paul Gascoigne was better than all of these IMHO.

Extremely difficult to compare one player against another, when each brings something totally unique. Stevie G has been an incredibly loyal and consistent performer for what has been a pretty average Liverpool team over the last 20 years. To show how good a player he could be, he should have signed for Chelsea when he had the opportunity. Would he have stood out with other class players around him? Impossible to make a judgment - cos it never happened. To me, the finest British midfielder over the last 20 years, and I have no respect for anyone who shags his brothers misses, is Ryan Giggs. Can you compare Gerrard and Giggs - impossible, as it is only recently that Giggs has been playing central midfield. If I could pick one player to pop into a Leicester midfield, it would be Yaya Toure, but it would **** any chance of abiding with FFP.

This could lead to an interesting thread.

Who would you all choose to be in your 'World XI' from the last 20 years?

You have made it difficult with your 20 years because I can't include George Best, Gordan Banlks, Booby Moore, Johann Cruyf etc but this would be my 'immediate thoughts'

GK Shilton
RB Cafu
CD Blanc
CD Cannavaro
LB Maldini
LM Giggs
CM Maradonna
CM Gascoigne
RM Christiano Ronaldo
S Messi
S Van Basten

PS - think I've maybe stretched the 20 years a bit <laugh>

Casilias
Cafu
Cannavaro
Nesta
Roberto Carlos
Cristiano Ronaldo
Iniesta
Gerrard
Ronaldinho
Ronaldo
Messi

Obviously there is no balance to the team but at their peak all of them would walk into any side in the world

I'd do a 3-4-3.

Schmeichel

Thuram
Cannavaro
Maldini

Ronaldinho
Figo
Zidane(c)

Cristiano Ronaldo
Messi
Bergkamp

It's ****ing hard choosing 11 players.

Schmeichel
Lahm Nesta Maldini Carlos
Xavi Zidane
Iniesta Messi Ronaldo
Bergkamp

Subs; Buffon, Cafu, Cannavaro, Scholes, Ronaldinho, Henry, Ronaldo.

Good to see Kasper get some mentions <whistle>

How did I forget Zidane! Swap him for Ronaldinho

Subs- Kahn, Lahm, Maldini, Ronaldinho, Xavi, Henry, Rivaldo

Evening Foxes. Was just glancing thru various threads and stumbled upon this. So if you don't mind me sticking my opinion in...... Stevie G is a top class player who has been in a fairly average team. If he wasn't any good would the likes of Bayer,Real,Chelsea et al have tried to sign him. I'm sure had Fergie managed somewhere other than united he would've loved him in his team.
I'd also agree with you fosse filberto ref Maradona and 86. Genius. IMO the best player ever.

City legends Matt Elliott and Gerry Taggart are on Soccer AM this morning

@SoccerAM: BREAKING - Matt Elliott announced manager of Thai Premier League side Army United in Bangkok.

A 20 year old Portuguese player for Tourizense called Carlos Alexandre but known as Alex has died during a match of a suspected heart attack

RIP

Derby have signed Michael Keane on loan from Man U. Not bothered in the slightest as I felt his inexperience cost us at times last season. I think Liam Moore looks alot stronger defensively then Keane and now we have Wasilewski so we dont need a new defender

Middlesbrough have signed Shay Given on loan, Bournemouth have signed Nico Yennaris on loan from Arsenal someone who we was linked with in the summer

3 good signings for said teams, although we don't need to worry too much about them as none of them are near us in the table or teams we're about to play. Keane is a good acquisition for any team, but agreed that had we signed him now it would just hinder Moore's development, who may not be quite as promising but at least he's a long-term project for us rather than another team (sorry Moore, I do think you're a great player btw!). Keane was good for us last season but I think we've got better right now, with Miquel, who I actually really rate, currently unable to get a spot in the team, and internationals Whitbread and St. Ledger out of the squad entirely. Whitbread must be sick to death with Michael Keane- he'll probably oust him at Derby like he did for us last year.

Shay Given has joined Middlesbrough on a months loan.

They play Burnley in that time. Hopefully he can inspire them to a win.
