Was that ever confirmed? It was always a weird signing anyway as he's got to be on an absolute fortune

Yes, Tan said it. He even claimed Villa were happy to pay Chambers off to subsidise us getting him. Tan seems to stretch the truth a bit at times for dramatic effect. <laugh>

Yeah I thought that was an odd thing for Villa to propose.. the only reason I could think of is that they thought if they could help us get promoted they could buy Philogene back in the summer :cheesy:

Did anyone else read between the lines when Tan mentioned the Philogene situation. I seemed to think he was suggesting Villa would have to match any offers that exceeded £15milion.

He said something along the lines of ‘…and we will be receiving more offers’ made me think that we might perhaps see a club, let’s say Fenerbache, offer £20-25million :emoticon-0116-evilg

That kind of shenanigans would soon put people off wanting to deal with us. Would just shoot ourselves in the foot.

I thought it was going to be an initial six month loan and they were going to cover much of his wages? But even if they covered say 75% and he's on 80k/week we're still in for 20k/week and that may have pushed us too close to the FFP limit that they are working with. I may have misunderstood however.

Would have made no sense as a loan.

He was told he had no future at villa. Maybe they thought a loan and him playing, versus him staying and not playing would make his value higher/ chance anyone else would buy him/ loan him and pay more of his wages higher.

Clearly not as it didn't happen. But it didn't happen as a permanent either.

Without knowing the proposal or intent behind it though that's a bit of a sweeping pronouncement to make. The boundary between loans and permanents seem to be blurring as they're quite commonly being used more creatively to structure what are to all intents and purposes permanents these days

Errrrr.......why? It was clearly said it was the 'commercials' that they couldn't match up to FFP limits. So, if it could have worked financially a loan of a very experienced higher quality than what we've got centre half, at an 'affordable' wage to help us get over the line into the playoffs would surely have made sense. We would then have possibly assessed whether we sign him (if we got promoted) or he's back in the shop window for Villa to offload him. Makes sense to me, although as has been said above we don't know the details and therefore my comments here are but one possibility.

Wouldn’t the bigger problem be we were out of loan spots?
