The TLDR is basically we are pushing the boat out with the wage expenditure. A bit of streamlining will help but it looks like they're gambling knowing the risk a bit. KLP sale helped in that financial year to negate the operating loss so in FFP terms we only lost like £5m which is on the low end for the championship. In my opinion, the next set will be the real litmus test. It will include a bumper year of gate receipts and commercials but wont include a big player sale. If we dont go up then Greaves and/or Jaden are on the market
No, just expect to see the price of your favourite biscuits increase in the next few months. You would imagine if they are going to spend £1.5m on a new pitch in the next few months they have everything under control - similar to the Allams before they left. Oh, is that the time?
Did anyone else read between the lines when Tan mentioned the Philogene situation. I seemed to think he was suggesting Villa would have to match any offers that exceeded £15milion. He said something along the lines of ‘…and we will be receiving more offers’ made me think that we might perhaps see a club, let’s say Fenerbache, offer £20-25million
Am I being naive here, or does this not feel that worrying? We knew we’d have to spend a bit to catch up to other Champ clubs. I think we can all agree we squandered a bit, but isn’t the whole point of selling players like KLP that you can afford to spend more on wages than you usually would be able to afford. If we don’t go up we’ve now got more assets we can sell - Jaden, Greaves and even Jones? Aren’t we just investing in the team with a get out clause if PL money doesn’t come our way?
And no offence taken. Thats why we need Emojis on here. Re the quote its the same as the 10,000 hour rule. And Dean I tnink had put his 10.000 hours in when he got his glorious goal and elevation to the Tiger Vallhalla. Not so sure about Mo
This year's accounts in isolation don't feel worrying, you're right. We actually lost less than the previous year, meaning that these two years of the cycle add up to 12m of losses, meaning we could lose a further 17m this season and be fine (which is no doubt why we were able to push the boat out on Philogene's fee etc.) and that's before any potential deductions which make FFP calculations harder to do than just looking at your set of accounts. It's this next year's accounts coming in and the year of KLP's sale dropping off next year that makes next year a bit trickier to navigate, and will require a new sale. Reports just out are saying the same thing about Villa. If truth be told I'd rather sell Jaden than Greaves for the romance of the local boy staying, but on the pitch I think we'd rather sell Greaves and keep Jaden. Jaden saying he wants PL football next season though feels a bit of a 'come and get me'. I also wonder if all these headlines about us needing to sell a player are all that helpful as it makes it harder for us to negotiate a good fee. We'll have to hope we have 2-3 clubs willing to offer big fees for him to get a bidding war going.
What was the consequence? they certainly didn’t receive any points deduction. They also took the piss valuing average players at 80m I’m sure we could do similar in a more discrete and complex way
Didn't staff receive bans for it? One of the guys involved had moved on to Spurs at that point so Spurs received more of a punishment..
I was always more nervous about the debts in the latter Allam days, because it didn’t feel like there was a way out as we let player contracts run down. Bowen was really a rare case after we got relegated. There also wasn’t a lot of revenue streams. But under this regime, at least as it stands, it feels like we are protecting our investments a bit better. We have a number of assets and commercial and gate revenue is increasing. It feels like the odd loss could be recouped if needed.
Didn’t Tan say Oscar going was key to managing FFP/Zaroury deal? Reports in Brazil saying the deal has stalled.
I have to admit it'd be funny if Oscar stayed, LR had to start playing him, and he banged in 8 goals.. Would remind me of when Hernandez got injured when Ehab was trying to sell him, then came back late in the season and scored for fun.
As they always have been. To all intents and purposes, just their success is allingned with ours at this moment in time.
I thought overall the accounts were really promising. Matchday income up, commercial almost doubled and the wage bill wasn't as high as I was expecting considering we had a lot of big earners who contributed very little. There might be a small increase in the wage bill for this year but we shifted Baxter, Vale, Pelkas, Oscar (assuming he goes) and Tetteh along with Sinik & Allahyar for the 2nd half of the year so we're not too bad. We'll need a yearly sale but that's common for most Championship clubs. I don't think Philogene would stay anyway
That's just the way the Championship works though. Last season Coventry lost out on promotion to the PL and had to sell Gyökeres for 20m and Hamer for 17m to balance the books. They've then reinvested a lot of that to try and go again this season. If we don't go up we'll sell a couple and try and rebuild for another go. FFP simply doesn't allow you to spend your way out of the division as it limits the losses you are allowed to make.
