I agree with this.
My beef with Defoe is not that he isn't a Prem-quality striker, merely that he is not a top 4 quality striker. If we have no aspirations of top 4 - and our fans are prepared to accept that - then, fair enough, let him start every game (as he appears to be now demanding, to bolster his World Cup selection chances). However, I strongly suspect that the club and most of us fans do have top 4 aspirations, in which case it's better to let Defoe ply his "first name on the sheet" trade at another Prem club, one that doesn't have top 4 aspirations.
If I may be so bold HIAG., I'd say you've been rather clever in confusing the term "first name on team sheet" with the general concession that says "team and squad as a whole might benefit from giving Defoe more game time".
As I'm sure you know, we are growing tired of watching a striker who has started in nearly all of the 11 premiership games, struggle. AVB has played combinations of creative players along-side and behind the Spaniard, to no avail. Can you seriously argue that if Defoe had been give such opportunities, in the prem, his goal tally this season, would be worse then what we've seen from the new guy.
With Adebayor reported missing, we are still waiting to see a striker display any sort of top 4 form this season and why ? because only the new guy has been tested in front of the new array of talented creative players.
What is for sure is that something has to change., that change has to be sooner rather then later and it's would be foolish to bring in another striker at this stage only to wait another year or so for him to gel as well.
Spurs need to finish in the top 4 finish now. There will be dreadful consequences should we fail.
