The United States presidential election of 1796 was the 3rd quadrennial presidential election. It was held from Friday, November 4 to Wednesday, December 7, 1796. It was the first contested American presidential election and the only one in which a president and vice president were elected from opposing tickets. The ratification of the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1804 made such a result unlikely in the future.
With incumbent President George Washington having refused a third term in office, incumbent Vice President John Adams from Massachusetts became a candidate for the presidency on the Federalist Party ticket with former Governor Thomas Pinckney of South Carolina as the next most popular Federalist. Their opponents were former Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson from Virginia along with Senator Aaron Burr of New York of the Democratic-Republican. At this point, each man from any party ran alone, as the formal position of "running mate" had not yet been established.
Hey anti ! Back on the south island. Had a great week in London/Essex. Grandson is a real pleasure (unlike my football team at the moment). I bet you were delighted with Saints thrashing of Sunderland yesterday. Hope family life has been o.k. for you in the last week. I was lovely seeing my daughter & son-in-law in their new home. Nice area, with plenty of great walks. Can't wait to go back up there.

. Not a bad day today, went for a long walk lunchtime, as part of my new keep fit campaign. Walked alot up in London & Essex last week. Great sight at the Tower of London with hundreds of ceramic poppies filling the moat. Have a good day.
