The United States presidential election of 1796 was the 3rd quadrennial presidential election. It was held from Friday, November 4 to Wednesday, December 7, 1796. It was the first contested American presidential election and the only one in which a president and vice president were elected from opposing tickets. The ratification of the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1804 made such a result unlikely in the future.

With incumbent President George Washington having refused a third term in office, incumbent Vice President John Adams from Massachusetts became a candidate for the presidency on the Federalist Party ticket with former Governor Thomas Pinckney of South Carolina as the next most popular Federalist. Their opponents were former Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson from Virginia along with Senator Aaron Burr of New York of the Democratic-Republican. At this point, each man from any party ran alone, as the formal position of "running mate" had not yet been established.

In February 1797, a vessel named the “Sydney Cove” was ship wrecked on Preservation Island between Tasmania and the Australia Mainland. On 28th February the long boat was equipped and dispatched in an effort to reach Port Jackson with news of the wreck. On board this small boat was Mr. Thomas – Chief Mate, Mr. Clarke – supercargo, 3 European seaman and twelve Lascars (labourers from India/Asia).
However ill fortune was still to be their lot and after a few days at sea, the boat was also wrecked and the men were cast ashore somewhere on 90 Mile Beach on the Victorian Coast. They were able to collect some food, including some rice from the wreck and these 17 seaman started to walk on 15 March 1797 along the Coast in an endeavour to find their way back to Port Jackson.

The Action of 16 October 1799 was a minor naval engagement during the French Revolutionary Wars between a squadron of British Royal Navy frigates and two frigates of the Spanish Navy close to the Spanish naval port of Vigo in Galicia. The Spanish ships were a treasure convoy, carrying silver specie and luxury trade goods across the Atlantic Ocean from the colonies of New Spain to Spain. Sighted by British frigate HMS Naiad enforcing the blockade of Vigo late on the 15 October, the Spanish ships were in the last stages of their journey. Turning to flee from Naiad, the Spanish soon found themselves surrounded as more British frigates closed in.

Although they separated their ships in an effort to split their opponents, the Spanish captains were unable to escape: Thetis was captured after a short engagement with HMS Ethalion on the morning of 16 October, while Santa Brigada almost reached safety, only being caught on the morning of 17 October in the approaches to the safe harbour at Muros. After a short engagement amid the rocks she was also captured by an overwhelming British force. Both captured ships were taken to Britain, where their combined cargoes were transported with great fanfare to the Bank of England. The eventual value of their cargo was assessed as at least £618,040, resulting in one of the largest hauls of prize money ever awarded.
 
August 4, 1800 The United States Census conducted its second Census.

It showed that 5,308,483 people were living in the United States, of whom 893,602 were slaves.

Act of Union (1801)

A law that made Britain and Ireland one state. The 1798 United Irishmen Rebellion and the threat of a French invasion convinced William Pitt that this was crucial for national security. The Act was passed in August 1800 and came into force on 1 January 1801. It created the United Kingdom, abolished the Irish parliament and united the Church of Ireland and Church of England. Thirty-two Irish peers entered the UK House of Lords and 100 Irish MPs the House of Commons.

London, 1802 Summary
The poem begins with a plaintive call to John Milton (1608-1674), a much-loved and respected English poet, and one of Wordsworth's great influences. The speaker laments the fact that Milton isn't around anymore, since, as he sees it, England needs a guiding voice. The speaker flat-out condemns the state of the nation, saying that it's a stagnant swamp (gross!), and that the English people have forgotten all the things that used to make them so glorious, including religion, military might, and literature. The speaker worries that the Englishmen of his day are too selfish and debased, and wishes Milton could return and give the nation a good old-fashioned pep talk.

The Castle Hill rebellion, which occurred in Sydney in 1804, originated in the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland. This rebellion has been described as one of the most concentrated episodes of violence in Irish history, with a death toll on all sides estimated at 30,000. In turn it grew from the seeds of the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789. It was the first nationally organised rebellion in Ireland, and is generally considered the startof the modern phase of Ireland's struggle for self-government. The 1798 Rebellion culminated at the Battle of Vinegar Hill, outside Enniscorthy in County Wexford, although military and legal mopping-up operations continued until 1801. In the aftermath of the rebellion, 400 or more participants were transported to New South Wales.

The Battle of Trafalgar (21 October 1805) was a naval engagement fought by the Royal Navy against the combined fleets of the French and Spanish Navies, during the War of the Third Coalition (August&#8211;December 1805) of the Napoleonic Wars (1803&#8211;1815).

The battle was the most decisive naval victory of the war. Twenty-seven British ships of the line led by Admiral Lord Nelson aboard HMS Victory defeated thirty-three French and Spanish ships of the line under French Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve off the southwest coast of Spain, just west of Cape Trafalgar. The Franco-Spanish fleet lost twenty-two ships, without a single British vessel being lost.

The British victory spectacularly confirmed the naval supremacy that Britain had established during the eighteenth century and was achieved in part through Nelson's departure from the prevailing naval tactical orthodoxy, which involved engaging an enemy fleet in a single line of battle parallel to the enemy to facilitate signalling in battle and disengagement, and to maximise fields of fire and target areas. Nelson instead divided his smaller force into two columns directed perpendicularly against the larger enemy fleet, with decisive results.

Nelson was mortally wounded during the battle, becoming one of Britain's greatest war heroes. The commander of the joint French and Spanish forces, Admiral Villeneuve, was captured along with his ship Bucentaure. Spanish Admiral Federico Gravina escaped with the remnant of the fleet and succumbed months later to wounds sustained during the battle.
 
Defeat at Buenos Aires 1806-1807.

In 1806, after the renewal of hostilities between England and Spain, Commodore Sir Home Popham on his own initiative set sail with his whole squadron from Cape Town, in the capture of which place he had recently taken part, crossed the South Atlantic, and invaded the Spanish vice-royalty of the River Plate. His expedition included the 71st regiment under General Beresford.

County Asylums Act - 1808

The County Asylums Act was introduced in the UK Parliament to establish places to care for people with mental health problems.

&#8226;Poet John Clare (1793-1864) spent 23 years in the St Andrew's Hospital in Northampton, but was given freedom to wander round the town and local area.

&#8226;The medical attendant at West Auckland Asylum considered that 'bleedings, blisters, and setons' were the principal resources of medicine for relieving 'maniacal excitement'.


Hi anti - I would have thought that if you were making a decent profit, they should have at least laid on some dancing girls to celebrate you being made up to VP. Another good walk today through Northwood Park in Cowes, then along the seafront. Trying to stick to a decent diet, eating the right food. The War against Austria of 1809 starts with the invasion of Austrian troops into Bavaria on 9th of april 1809 and ends with the Peace of Schönbrunn on 14th of october 1809.
This war is often also called the War of the 5th Coalition.

In 1810, the French Empire reached its greatest extent. On the continent, the British and Portuguese remained restricted to the area around Lisbon and to besieged Cadiz. Napoleon married Marie-Louise, an Austrian Archduchess, with the aim of ensuring a more stable alliance with Austria and of providing the Emperor with an heir. As well as the French Empire, Napoleon controlled the Swiss Confederation, the Confederation of the Rhine, the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Italy. Territories allied with the French included: the Kingdom of Spain, the Kingdom of Westphalia, the Kingdom of Naples, the Principality of Lucca and Piombino, and Napoleon's former enemies, Prussia and Austria. Denmark&#8211;Norway also allied with France in opposition to Great Britain and Sweden in the Gunboat War.

Treaty of Paris of 1815,was signed on 20 November 1815 following the defeat and second abdication of Napoleon Bonaparte. In February, Napoleon had escaped from his exile on Elba; he entered Paris on 20 March, beginning the Hundred Days of his restored rule. Four days after France's defeat in the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was persuaded to abdicate again, on 22 June. King Louis XVIII, who had fled the country when Napoleon arrived in Paris, took the throne for a second time on 8 July.
