On 1st January, 1778 Captain James Cook in the Resolution and Charles Clerke in the Discovery were anchored off Christmas Island in the Pacific Ocean. William Ellis, surgeon's second mate on the Discovery, wrote "In the evening, captain Cook made the signal for the boats to return, and the next morning (January 2d), we weighed our anchors, and proceeded to the northward."
Heinrich Zimmerman, from Speir in Holland (now Speyer, Germany), seaman on the Discovery, noted in his journal they left "after having gathered such a supply of live turtles that we ate nothing else for four or five weeks; we kept them alive during that time by washing their eyes every day."

Hey Woopert - didn't know you could cook turtles that many ways - fine sunny day - no trophies from darts just a furry tongue this a.m. which has been fixed up with a bacon egg and baked bean sarnie with HP sauce - lazy weekend taking my dad to the club for grub this evening - the high command is not returning till Wednesday of next week I'm thinking of how I can surprise her when she gets home a bunch of flowers maybe but I thought I could change the locks but in fear of my long term longevity I decided against it - ATB

The Penitentiary Act was a British Act of Parliament passed in 1779 which introduced state prisons for the first time. The Act was drafted by the prison reformer John Howard and the jurist William Blackstone and recommended imprisonment as an alternative sentence to death or transportation.

The prison population in England and Wales had risen following the United States Declaration of Independence as the American Colonies had been used as the destination for transported criminals. Also, Howard had produced a report to a House of Commons select committee in 1777 which had identified appalling conditions in most of the prisons he had inspected.

G'day anti - 1-1 draw with Mansfield Town. Rain in morning, then sun in afternoon. Hope England can win their next game in Estonia tomorrow convincingly. Changing the locks is a bit drastic isn't it ?! What about a nice romantic evening, cook her a fillet steak, a bottle of red wine, candles, soft music.......

In October 1780, a powerful storm slammed the islands of the Caribbean, killing more than 20,000 people. Known as the Great Hurricane of 1780, it is among the deadliest storms ever recorded. Specifics about the hurricane, such as its exact point of origin and strength, are unknown, as it took place before the advent of modern storm-tracking technology.

Hey Woopert - do I detect a little disquiet in the ranks regarding your managers formation and team selections ? no match thread today either what's occurring - the kids old school fete today and the high command has told me where to find the tickets she has sold and could I take them down there - yup found the tickets but no money so the fillet steak bottle of red etc etc has gone straight down the crapper and if I did try that it would be greeted with "well what is all this in aid of what are you so guilty about" its been a bad start to the day see my rant in the new prediction game - on a brighter note have a great week in the big smoke ATB

The Battle of Jersey (6 January 1781)was an attempt by French forces to invade Jersey and remove the threat the island posed to French and American shipping in the American War of Independence. Jersey provided a base for British privateers, and France, engaged in the war as an ally of the United States, sent an expedition to gain control of the island. The expedition ultimately failed, and its commander, Baron Phillipe de Rullecourt, died of wounds sustained in the fighting. The battle is often remembered for the death of the British officer Major Peirson, and a painting based on his final moments by John Singleton Copley.

Awfs should have realised by now that opposing teams break up our play by legal or illegal means, and referees in Division 2 appear too weak or poor to control it. No matchday thread I cannot understand - would have thought someone could have done one before kick off. Still, never mind ! Looking forward to trip to London/Essex thanks <ok>

The 'Laki eruption' of 1783–1784 occurred in an ice-free portion of the Grímsvötn volcanic system in the Eastern Volcanic Zone (EVZ) of Iceland. The name Laki comes from a nearby mountain, and the eruption was in fact known as the 'Skaftáreldar' (Skaftár Fires) in Iceland. The Grímsvötn volcanic system is the most frequently activevolcanic system in Iceland with about 70 eruptions in the last c.1130 years (Thordarson and Larsen, 2007). The Grímsvötn volcanic system last erupted in May 2011.

The British general election of 1784 resulted in William Pitt the Younger securing an overall majority of about 120 in the House of Commons of Great Britain, having previously had to survive in a House which was dominated by his opponents.

No probs <cheers>

1785 Inn offers traditional B&B lodging, comfortable/homey rooms accompanied by delicious/hearty breakfasts. We are located on six acres of property at the Scenic Vista, one of the most photographed and painted spots in the country. The views from our Inn, the swimming pool, and our gardens are unsurpassed. Our cross-country ski trails offer interesting nature walks and fishing during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. We are also convenient to North Conway's shopping mecca and all of the White Mountain attractions. Frommer's Travel Guide Newsletter recently called the view from 1785 Inn one of the top 15 views in the world from a hotel or inn.

Shays Rebellion 1786
A short overivew of the "Shays' rebellion" in Massachusetts in the wake of the American Revolution, in which many poor farmers and war veterans attempt to shut down the state's courts in protest at the debt burden on veterans and high taxes on farmers.

Pick 1 from 3 or pick them all I lean towards 3 but then that could be me and thanks again for keeping the thread breathing whilst Woopert takes a break ATB

The First Fleet of 11 ships, each one no larger than a Manly ferry, left Portsmouth in 1787 with more than 1480 men, women and children onboard. Although most were British, there were also African, American and French convicts. After a voyage of three months the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on 24 January 1788. Here the Aboriginal people, who had lived in isolation for 40,000 years, met the British in an uneasy stand off at what is now known as Frenchmans Beach at La Perouse.

March 1790– HMS Sirius, while transporting supplies to Norfolk Island, becomes wrecked and destroyed on a reef. This destroys many of the colony's supplies, and Phillip is again forced to introduce rationing to avoid famine.
Following the loss of the Sirius, Lieutenant-Governor King returns to Britain to report on the difficulties of the settlements in New South Wales. Marine commander Robert Ross takes control of Norfolk Island in his absence, and under his harsh rule the condition on the island deteriorates.

On his television show, Glenn Beck said he’s not a political pundit. He’s an entrepreneur. Then he began a nearly 10-minute infomercial for his new Made in America jeans, sold online by his 1791 Supply & Co.

1792 It was the year the French first set foot on Tasmanian soil and this very French, very pungent little cheese, matured on aromatic Huon Pine boards, celebrates what could have been. It is made in the traditional method - its pinky-orange rind the result of being regularly hand-washed in brine, encouraging the surface bacteria that give this cheese its complex flavour and aroma.

During the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 5000 or more people were listed in the official register of deaths between August 1 and November 9. The vast majority of them died of yellow fever, making the epidemic in the city of 50,000 people one of the most severe in United States' history. By the end of September, 20,000 people had fled the city. The mortality rate peaked in October, before frost finally killed the mosquitoes and brought an end to the epidemic in November. Doctors tried a variety of treatments, but knew neither the origin of the fever nor that it was transmitted by mosquitoes (which was not verified until the late nineteenth century).

The mayor and a committee of two dozen organized a fever hospital at Bush Hill and other crisis measures. The assistance of the Free African Society was requested by the city and readily agreed to by the members, based on the mistaken assumption that native Africans would have the same partial immunity to the new disease as many had to malaria, the most common source of fever epidemics during the summer months.[2] Black nurses aided the sick and the group's leaders hired additional men to take away corpses, which most people would not touch. Blacks in the city died at the same rate as whites, about 240 altogether. Some neighboring towns refused to let refugees in from Philadelphia, for fear they were carrying the fever. Major port cities such as Baltimore and New York had quarantines against refugees and goods from Philadelphia, although New York sent financial aid to the city.
