Steam locomotives destined for scrapping normally had their valve gear disconnected from the eccentric crank, allowing them to be towed with less cylinder resistance. 0-8-0 switcher No. 7718, however, was still intact when I photographed her in the dead line at the Detroit engine terminal in March 1954, and was not officially dropped from the roster until two years later.

VEP7732 is seen just east of Farnborough working a Basingstoke to Waterloo train sometime between November 1970 and November 1972 when it was running in this condition (no raised metal BR double arrow symbol) . The train is just about to pass over the bridge beneath which the Guildford to Reading line passes.
