The Society has made remarkable progress since 1972 when it was first founded as the 28xx Society. Today we are a highly motivated team with many different skills and occupational backgrounds. We are always aiming to build on our successes and welcome new members and ideas to our team to assist, either financially, or in the engineering work. Since the recent overhaul of 2857 our current role is keeping a watching brief on the operation and well-being of the loco.

Membership of the active '2857 Society' is open to all, the only requirements are that you become a shareholder, (this can be from as little as five £1 shares, or as many as you like!) and that you pay either a £5 annual subscription, or a one off fee of £50 for lifetime membership. Members receive a copy of '28 Lines' the society newsletter nominally 2 per year. Members are also entitled to discounts on the society's exclusive range of half size Great Western style house number plates in solid cast brass and full size replica number plates as fitted to many preserved ex GWR locomotives.

The prototype of this locomotive was built at Swindon Works in 1903. This was at a time when the Great Western Railway was producing a range of standard locomotives, designed by the railway's Chief Mechanical Engineer, George Jackson Churchward, which were unquestionably the most technically advanced in Britain for their time. Locomotives of this general design, the 28xx class, continued to be produced until 1942 and hauled most of the long distance heavy goods trains on the GWR and BR (W.R.) for sixty years.

No. 2857 was built at a cost, including her tender, of £5,948 and travelled well over 11/4 million miles before withdrawal in 1963 and subsequent sale for scrap to Woodham Brothers at Barry Dock in South Wales.

2859 is a GWR heavy freight engine of the 28xx class built at Swindon in May 1918, to a design of George Jackson Churchward's dating from 1903. The engine cost £4,992 when new and £956 for the tender; in the year 2000 £6000 will just about buy two large connecting rods! Engines of the type were produced in batches from 1905 onwards, and on 25th February 1906, an engine of the class hauled 2,010 tons on a test train. This steam haulage record in Britain lasted from 1906 to the 1980s, when 9F 92203 Black Prince (by then preserved) pulled a train of over 2200 tons. In all, 84 engines were built to Churchward`s design. From 1937 to 1942 a further batch of 83 was built with enlarged cabs and outside steam pipes to modified designs by Charles Collett.

BR/GWR Churchward 2-0-0 Class 2800 No. 2861 at Woodham Brothers scrapyard, Barry, Wales on 18th August 1966. Built at Swindon Works in June 1918, it was withdrawn from 86E Severn Tunnel Junction shed in March 1963. The class was designed by G.J. Churchward for heavy freight work. They were the first 2-8-0 class in Great Britain. The prototype, originally numbered 97 but later renumbered 2800, appeared in 1903. Construction of the production series commenced in 1905 and continued until 1919. The 2884 Class which appeared in 1938–1942 was developed from the 2800 class and is sometimes classified with it. The only serious problem met with in traffic was with the sealing of the internal steam pipes. Beginning in 1934 most of the class had them replaced with the outside kind. The 2884s differed from the original engines in a number of respects, the most obvious being that a more modern Collett side window cab was provided and that they were built with outside steam pipes. The locomotive became one of the 'Barry Ten', and remained stored at Barry until 2010, when it was bought by the Great Western Society at Didcot. In 2013, it became the final ex-Woodham Brothers locomotive to leave Barry when it was moved to the Llangollen Railway. The locomotive has now been dismantled and has donated its cylinder and saddle block to the construction of GWR 4700 Class 2-8-0 No. 4709, along with several other components. Its boiler currently (August 2014) sits in the frames of Didcot's new build 2999 Saint 'Lady of Legend' to enable the design of pipework befor 2999s own boiler is ready. The frames of 2861 were cut up in June 2014. A schoolboy trainspotter in his school uniform of peaked school cap, shirt, tie, pullover, short trousers and knee socks, can be seen at the controls in the locos cab. By 1966, school caps and shorts were no longer worn by the vast majority of boys, only public and grammar schools hanging on to them.

Rural and Remote Health 14: 2867. (Online) 2014
Introduction: It is generally considered that rural hospitals have a much lower capacity to adequately care for patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Analysis of the demographic and logistic factors affecting the outcome of intravenous (IV) thrombolysis in patients with AIS in a rural hospital are presented.
Methods: The observational study included 300 patients with AIS who were consecutively treated with IV thrombolysis. Long-term outcome and hemorrhagic complication rate in patients from rural and urban populations were compared.
Results: A total of 60.7% of patients were transported from rural areas. In the rural patients thrombolytic therapy at night was performed less frequently compared to that for urban patients (p=0.01). There were no differences in frequency of treatment between rural and urban patients treated with IV thrombolysis on weekends and on working days (p=0.47). In rural patients mortality was higher (p=0.04). The presence of hemorrhagic transformation (HT) (p=0.87) and of symptomatic intra-cerebral hemorrhage (SICH) (p=0.61) were similar in both groups. A multivariate analysis showed no impact of place of onset on favorable outcome after 3 months (p=0.9), on the presence of (SICH) (p=0.43) or on mortality rate (p=0.69).
Conclusions: Patients from rural areas are less likely to be treated with IV thrombolysis during the night. Rural and urban patients treated in the hospital located in the agricultural region had a similar efficacy and safety profile of thrombolytic treatment.

The most common error message during installation of SVOffice 2009 on both Windows Vista and Windows 7 is an "Installation error code 2869 is encountered" message. This message is due to the new security model used in Windows Vista and Windows 7, which breaks many older installers. Be sure to run the SETUP.EXE file and not the .MSI file to install SVOffice 2009. If this problem continues to occur, follow these steps:

Step 1: Disable the User Account Control setting. In the Control Panel, navigate to the Action Center and select "Change User Account Control". Choose the "legacy" setting. This will likely require a reboot.

Step 2: Install SVOffice. There should be no errors during installation. Be sure to install the HASP drivers and FlexPDE as well when prompted.

Step 3: Re-enable the User Account Control setting. This step is optional but recommended. A second reboot is likely required.

MIDDLETON, Wis. (WMTV) -- The Middleton Police Department responded to several significant cases in 2017 as outlined in an annual report released Wednesday.

In April 2017, the department investigated the city's first homicide in five years. 82-year-old Agnes Bram was found murdered inside her home. Police arrested John Hamann in connection to the crime.

Police also investigated three missing persons cases, two bank robberies and a number of overdose incidents involving heroin.

Use of Force
In 2017, 436 criminal charges were filed with the Dane County District Attorney's Office. 2871 citations were issued and police responded to 21,355 calls for service. Police used a reportable level of force in 24 incidents. Seven of those incidents were reviewed by a Critical Incident Review Board. All seven incidents were determined to be appropriate use of force and within departmental policy guides.
