AEC REGENT III 31-SEATER - 2878
You must log in or register to see images

During a decline in patronage in the early 1950s, the Department of Road Transport & Tramways designed a small single deck bus, to be driver-only operated, to be used on lightly trafficked routes and to replace the last of the pre-war single deck half-cab buses and war-time Austerity buses still in service. These new buses carried 54 people - 23 standing and 31 seated - hence being dubbed the 31-seaters.

All were bodied by Commonwealth Engineering, Granville. Between 1951 and 1954, 120 31-seaters were built on Leyland OPS2/1, AEC Regal III and Daimler CVG6 chassis. Around this time, after the last Leyland OPD2/1 double decker deliveries finished, the Department issued a notice that no more double deckers were to be built, despite still having 52 double decker bus chassis in storage.

In 1954 the Department decided to have the 52 chassis bodied as 31-seaters. This comprised 34 Leyland OPD2/1s and 18 AEC Regent IIIs. The bodies of these 52 buses differed slightly to the original batch of 31-seaters.

2878 is an example of the last batch of 31-seaters. It was issued to traffic in December 1954, initially to Randwick depot. Later the bus was allocated to Brookvale, Willoughby and North Sydney depots, becoming a regular sight on lower North Shore 'wharf' runs to Musgrave St, Mosman, Cremorne and Neutral Bay wharves.

In the mid-1970s 2878 recieved an overhaul into the PTC blue & white livery, one of a very small number of 31-seaters to do so. It was withdrawn on August 31, 1979. The bus was purchased by a member for preservation, who then sold the bus to another member in the late 1980s, and carried out a thorough five-year restoration. 2878 was back on the road in 1995.

The bus today remains in a fully operational condition.

Specifications:

Engine: 9.6 litre OHV AEC diesel engine, bore 4.72", stroke 5.59", developing 125 B.H.P. at 1800 R.P.M.

Transmission: Four speed 'Wilson' air-operated pre-selector gearbox driving a worm drive differential.

Brakes: Air operated foot brake to all wheels and a mechanical park brake to the rear wheels.

24/96 with 8 mic/line inputs and 8 analogue outputs with adat I/O,AES and S/PDIF

Originally released in 2001, the Mobile I/O 2882 truly is the first digitally controlled FireWire interface designed specifically for the Macintosh.
The Granddaddy of them all, the 2882 just keeps getting better. A seminal piece of gear, the feature set of the 2882 represents a list of firsts in the industry. The 2882 was the first Mac-only FireWire interface on the market and was the first bus-powerable FireWire interface ever — 7 years and counting! The first 96k FireWire interface, and the first to feature digitally controlled analog stages, the 2882 has inspired an entire genre of gear.

Take a look at some other products on the market and you are sure to find numerous features and approaches originally invented by Metric Halo. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and as we look around the now-crowded FireWire interface market, we’re happy to say that we’re truly flattered!

Now, with the introduction of the 2882 Expanded, with integrated 2d Card, the 2882 jumps ahead of its competition again.

GWR 2884 Class
You must log in or register to see images

History
They were designed for heavy freight work and were a development of the earlier 2800 Class. The 2884s differed from the original engines in a number of respects, the most obvious being that a more modern Collett side window cab was provided and that they were built with outside steam pipes.

Production
83 of the 2884 class were built between 1938 and 1941. Those built during the war did not have the side window to the cab, and the side window on the others was plated over. This was to reduce glare, as a precaution against enemy air attacks. [1] The windows were reinstated after the war.

The locomotives were so popular with the ex-Great Western crews that the British Railways Western Region operating authorities wanted more of the class built after nationalisation in 1948; however, this request was turned down in favour of BR Standard Class 9Fs.

Oil firing
Between 1945 and 1947, coal shortages caused GWR to experiment with oil fired 2800 locomotives. Eight of the 2884 class were converted and renumbered from 4850. The experiment, encouraged by the government was abandoned in 1948 once the extra maintenance costs were calculated and the bill had arrived for the imported oil.

In the Year 2889 (also known as Year 2889) is a 1967 made-for-television, post-apocalyptic science fiction film from American International Pictures about the aftermath of a future nuclear war. The film stars Paul Petersen, Quinn O'Hara, Charla Doherty, Neil Fletcher and Hugh Feagin. AIP commissioned low-budget cult film auteur Larry Buchanan to produce and direct this film as a color remake of Roger Corman's 1955 film Day the World Ended.

In the Year 2889's title is borrowed from a short story of the same title by Jules Verne and his son, Michael Verne.

This locomotive was built as works no 2890 in 1943 by Hunslet Engine Company at Leeds as an austerity 0-6-0ST. It then entered service with the War Department as WD 75041.

When built the locomotive was the same as the LNER class J94.

It was renumbered 107 when it moved to the Longmoor Military where it carried the name Foggia.

In the early 1960s the locomotive was withdrawn from service and sold back to Hunslet for modifications.

In 1964 the locomotive was rebuilt by the Hunslet Engine Company and then became Works Number 3882. The rebuild was the result of a bid to meet stringent restrictions on smoke emissions.

An indepth look at the ETA 2892

  • I found this article about the ETA 2892 interesting as it's the base movement of several IWC models. I know IWC takes a lot of criticism from people with emotional (I've never seen a critic offer technical arguments) preferences for in-house movements. I'm not technically skilled to judge the author's credibility but going off his review, the ETA 2892 is a very good all-round movement. And I have no doubt the IWC required modifications improve it further.

And here's one from the same author with some comparisons with the ETA 2824:
