Indeed you could make the argument that Islam was a peaceable Religion until the brutality of the Christian Crusades was unleashed against them.
bollocks the first crusade was to take back Jerusalem AFTER every man woman and child was slaughtered in the open city, when the city was taken back the christians did the same to what the muslims had done , karma is a bitch
I confess to having no expertise about this period of history, just a general interest.
I is my understanding that before the First Crusade, Jerusalem was being squabbled over by local Arab and Turkish military leaders. The control of the City changed hands regularly. The population was made up of Jews, Christians and Muslim's.
It was only when the First Crusade arrived in the area that the Rulers at the time, fearing that the Christians would revolt in favour of the invaders, expelled them from the city.
Prior to this the three faiths had co-existed in Jerusalem as well as any such mix could be expected.
Once taken though the remaining Jewish and Muslim occupants were slaughtered leaving their possessions and property for the invaders.
This contrasts with Saladin's recapturing of the City.
He allowed Jews and Muslims back, expelled the European Christians, but allowed many thousands of Orthodox Christians to remain.
After Richard the First failed to take the city back he returned to Europe with his reputation as a military leader enhance but little else.
He, Saladin, then returned Jerusalem to an open City.
His successors even built hostels for the Christian Pilgrims.
It's many years since read up on this period but the point about the hostels has stuck with me.
The fore-runner of Youth Hostels!!!
This peaceable period was of course short lived.
