I confess to having no expertise about this period of history, just a general interest. I is my understanding that before the First Crusade, Jerusalem was being squabbled over by local Arab and Turkish military leaders. The control of the City changed hands regularly. The population was made up of Jews, Christians and Muslim's. It was only when the First Crusade arrived in the area that the Rulers at the time, fearing that the Christians would revolt in favour of the invaders, expelled them from the city. Prior to this the three faiths had co-existed in Jerusalem as well as any such mix could be expected. Once taken though the remaining Jewish and Muslim occupants were slaughtered leaving their possessions and property for the invaders. This contrasts with Saladin's recapturing of the City. He allowed Jews and Muslims back, expelled the European Christians, but allowed many thousands of Orthodox Christians to remain. After Richard the First failed to take the city back he returned to Europe with his reputation as a military leader enhance but little else. He, Saladin, then returned Jerusalem to an open City. His successors even built hostels for the Christian Pilgrims. It's many years since read up on this period but the point about the hostels has stuck with me. The fore-runner of Youth Hostels!!! This peaceable period was of course short lived.
Behave yourself. It's enough that, as Sunderland Fans we need faith to believe that one day we will win something again, without your suggesting that we move on to the Supernatural Planes
Hell will freeze over before Sunderland win anything again. Must be agony watching this unfold. Never the twain shall meet again,. ever!! Except cup competitions! I am a ****, by the way
I wonder if a mag player was to be so unfortunate as to miss a sitter, would he be taken into the physio room and have the offending foot chopped off.
Thank heaven's this will finally end years of idiotic funeral processions/banners/protests/marches/songs/death threats/stalking around Ashley. I'm not sure how the Mags will cope but now they'll have exactly what they've been asking for. They can now just become a normal club, turn up and support the team
He's the obvious choice tbh, available, experienced and likes a spend. Kane would be the ideal first signing.
I see some Mags are kicking off because people are pointing out the shameful human rights excecised by the Saudis. Apparently its not fair because Sheff Utd have Saudi money. I remember feeling it was a little unfair that Di Canio's arrival here was disrupted by the histrionics from the media and many Newcastle supporters. I hadn't seen any mention of Mussolini, fascism or political views when he ws at Sheff Wed or West Ham. It seems some people want their cake etc ....
Being a Sunderland supporter, in the past I admit that I had an irrational hatred towards them. Not so much nowadays, age has mellowed me. Now I will just see them as the baddies and my former feelings towards them would seem less irrational. Its like they've been taken over by the Empire off Star Wars, with Darth Vader as chairman. Rivalry aside, it's just another nail added to the many in the coffin that is football as far as I'm concerned. The fact that it involves our rivals is gonna bring it closer to home. It doesn't upset me as such, it just saddens me.
He'd already been at Lazio well before he played for those two clubs. His autobiography, which he published while at West Ham, clearly stated his political views ... ... that was well before his second spell at Lazio. West Ham named part of the ground after him, despite that, and the media were there to cover it
I don’t think he was born a fascist, put it that way. Political views usually manifest themselves over time Wasn’t aware that his book was out at that time nor am I aware of the contents relating to his facist views. At least that answers the question of why there wasn’t any questions when he signed for Sheffield Wednesday. With regards the general lack of furore, di Canio’s career was before the advent of social media and the ability that has to generate a wave of like-minded people to come together quickly than they did in the early 2000’s.
