How do you think ITV would have coped with the Canadian GP. Switched to Coronation Street just as the race resumed? Put on a re-run of one of Simon Cowell's rubbish programmes or perhaps filled the time with non-stop ads. Whatever the mistakes that the BBC makes it is far superior to ITV
If Steve Ryder gets back, I'll start a campaign just as I did with Legard. I can't stand the guy. Conversely, although Jake might look like a rabbit in the headlights, there is no-one sharper in the business. He's very well organised and extremely intelligent, as well as having a great sense of humour. He's very much in touch with the public and understands the fan base very well, whereas Ryder is focussed on his own performance and how 'professional' he looks - which renders him little more than a pseudo-professional. OK, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, he is human so he cannot possibly be as bad as Legard - albeit in a different role - but if you don't mind; NO THANKS!
I missed something I meant to include in my last post: Jake Humphrey has something vitally important; he is full of enthusiasm and he's genuine.
Genji makes a good point about Jakes tweets coming up on the BBC website, that's how I see them. I don't mind him but I don't think he will doing the job much longer, i can see him going to ITV after the Olympics to do the football over there, as Adrian Chiles has been a disaster on that front. I guess I'm a sucker for the ladies but I wouldn't mind Lee Mckenzie presenting as she has a motorsport background also I saw one of her tweets today and it was about her going to Brands for the F3, can't see Humphrey doing that unless it was a paid feature for the Beeb.
I don't want to lay into Humphrey too much because I think he's by far the best frontman I've seen on a Formula 1 show, but I get the impression this season that he's on autopilot and not really paying much attention. That said, we know from his tweets that he writes his own scripts so he clearly knows what's going on in the sport generally, which is all he needs to know. At the end of the day he is a professional presenter (and, it sounds like, the flavour of the month at the BBC, although I've never seen him on anything else) and I don't think a show that was 100% ex-drivers and ex-team owners would appeal to the mass audience. In a way, having a familiar BBC face leading the show is comforting for the casual fans and allows us lot to have a couple of ex-drivers in the commentary box and Jordan and Coulthard as the main punters. Tony Jardine was a nice man but a bit of a wet fish on-screen and that other bloke - Simon Something - god! he was bloody awful. Awful. All that said, I'd like to see a woman fronting the show. I'm not convinced about Lee McKenzie after her stint standing in for Humphrey, but I expect she'd improve. I like Vicky Hender Butlinson and I think she could handle it but, again, maybe it needs someone who's just a good presenter, like Humphrey, rather than a petrolhead.
I thought Lee did a good job that time. Is a hard thing to do and jake has clearly got more confident (too cnfident for my liking) as time has gone on, so I see no reason why she could not front it. I still mainton VB-H would not be good, but that is a personal opinion.
Hahahahaha… Adrian Chiles… What the hell is he doing on TV? Hahahahahahahahaha… seriously… Someone's taking the mickey; it must be a joke on the average thickie… Is the idea that they are trying to see just what they can get away with, with the average football fan? Hehahehahahahshhhhashhahahaaa… he's totally unbelievable, poor chap! Not only does he look utterly ridiculous, he's got the dullest voice I've ever heard - yet he seems to believe his own laughable hype! He is to sports presenters, what 'Airplane' is to disaster movies… Actually, he is a disaster all by himself. Why is he always eating wasps? He looks like a ventriloquist's dummy trying to fart. Completely and utterly ridiculous… Here he is, trying to skip without a rope:
Can we set up the 'Cosicave's guide to people he doesn't like' thread? I'm sure Legard and Chiles are just the start
I didn't say I dislike him. I don't personally dislike Legard either. It's just that I don't think either of them were (Legard)/are (wasps should avoid Birmingham) any good in their appointed roles.
I had a very detailed reply to all this. However, my pc decided to crash before i posted it and I lost it all! To summarise, I don't see the tweets as such a big problem. I would like to point out that much is made of viewers wanting the drivers to be more personable and human. This is exactly what Jake is doing, because he is personable and human. He is a normal bloke and this is exactly what his personal twitter account shows. The problem lies not with Jake, but with the beeb for linking his tweets. Eddie is an ex-team owner and that is exactly the reason why he is on the presenting team; to share his knowledge as a team owner! To complain that Jake asks Eddie about his old team is like complaining that Jake always brings up DC or Brundles experiences of racing. Can any among us say that, if given the chance to present F1, we wouldn't watch old races to help rebuild our knowledge? I'm a die hard F1 fan, it is my favourite sport bar none but I wouldn't just walk into a job like that half cocked! Surely the fact that Jake put this effort in shows that he cares? I managed to find this still on the beebs website. I think it adequately and positively shows Jake's excitement about getting the F1 job and his commitment to doing his job. Yes, he may end up leaving but that's what happens in life, people want new challenges in life eventually. Perhaps Jake is passionate about all sports fan rather than just F1, which is why he appears on different events. It's understandable why some fans would perceive that as not caring about F1, but I agree with Cosi in that Jake is genuine person.
The BBC have not linked Jake's personal twitter account with the BBC F1 page, it is Jake's F1 twitter account so should be F1 related, if he wants to tweet about his personal life then he should have a personal account and a F1 account. People want the drivers to be more open and human because they are interested in them because they are the stars of the show, I am sure most people who follow F1 do not care about Jake in this way. I have no problem with him refering to Eddie Jordan's or anyone else's careers but he just does it incessantly, everything vaguely related to a F1 team Jakes always brings up Jordan. You missed the point about him watching the dvds, he did not do it to brush up, he did it because he was not really into F1 before he got given the job and so had to get up to speed with F1. My point is that I would rather have someone present me the F1 coverage who is a knowledgable, passionate and a big fan of the sport they are presenting. I also think Jake can take the lighthearted jokey approach too far at times, it seems to be his only approach. Like I said before I get the impression that the F1 job is just a boost for his career which he will move on from when something bigger and better is offered rather than something he is generally enthusiastic about doing because of the love of it.
Just what is Adrian Chiles good at? He constantly repeats himself while trying to think what he should say or do next. A disaster.
I just hope Adrian Chiles doesn't end up doing the F1 with Eddie Jordan, that would be enough to make me
I dont mind Jake Humphrey's and dont think he is doing a bad job, i like the guy. I think he keeps the show flowing. It suits him better to present and introduce people, but not question them. I think he has a general F1 knowledge, appealing to newcomers to the sport and other who dont know the ins and outs, so he breaks it down for the general followers.
WestCoastBoogaloo. Excellent, patient and insightful post. Unfortunately it will do nothing to influence those that think that Jake Humphrey doesn't write about the things they want him to write about in his blog. There must be other websites that drone on and on about F1 in a dry, humourless manner that will be far more preferable than Humphrey's blog. If you buy a Pepperami, eat it, and think it tastes like ****, would you keep buying one every day, and then keep complaining it tastes like ****? I think some of you would.
