Pretty sure that Cedric will learn from Bertie when he returns, its so important that a full back does not fully commit himself to a tackle unless he is 100% sure he will get the ball. Cedric has the speed to match most players, just shepherd the winger, slow him down and give him something to think about, allowing the CBS to get into position and Tadic or whoever time to drop back. Pre season he was not tested but did not seem reckless, let's put it down to excitement and Sammy will sort him out

I'm not so sure about Cedric after yesterdays performance. Quite good in attack but really struggling in defense, just taking players out rather than get between them and goal. I though Martina was much more assured in defense, maybe start with him and bring Cedric on as an impact sub if we are loosing.

It amazes me how many fans write players off, or make decisions after one game. We MUST give players time to adjust to the league.

Remember Robert Pires? Absolutely lost in his first season, then showed what he was about.

Most full backs will struggle when confronted with pacey wingers with a lot of space to run into. Instead of looking at individual performances in defense, we should look how we defended as a team. If we continue to play what is effectively a 4-2-4 formation, our back line will always struggle and we should get used to it. This is the formation we played yesteday

I know that is a scary formation defensively, but bloody hell it excites me from an attacking perspective.... I can see another Sunderland happening with that on the right day :)

Yep, I think we played too attacking. But then you can't moan at a draw. Celtic fans keep on about Van Dijk playing dm. A few are even saying him and Wanyama would dominate for us.

I have been advocating that on some streams/forums. VVD looks like he perfect for that role, and there is less risk of a DM charging forward with the ball than a CB, in the Premier League.
I've seen some unfair criticism on forums, for the defence, but if the midfield isn't giving the right protection, then you end up playing like Lovren did at Liverpool, which is why we need to get the balance right.

You think we have more than a season with these guys?!

I hope so, leaves VVD for us :)

If any CB chose Everton above a chance to have some finesse coached into his game by one of the true modern legends of the game, then they'd prove themselves not right in the head enough to play for us.

Agreed, but they'd possibly be 20k or so a week better off.

No, it was an example of a player not written off. I'd certainly be giving then half a dozen games before judging them.

Henry wasn't great at first and he turned out alright too.

I think Cedric is going to be a cracking player for us. Nothing I saw yesterday dissuaded me from that view. Just a wee bit of ironing to do.

Just needs to learn to defend, if he struggled against Obertan then I'm already worried for the season. Looks fantastic going forward though and has PACE so that will mask a lot of his defensive shortcomings.

I think the physicality came as a bit of a shock to him in the first half. He will take a little while, but I think he'll be fine

Cedric wasn't great yesterday but the mistakes he made are the sort of thing that can be sorted out through good coaching. He will learn when to go forward and when not to. He will also learn what risks are worth taking and which arent, still a very good signing in my eyes. And hard to complain too much about him getting forward as he did assist our opening goal because he was forward. Judging a player new to the league on just one season is slightly premature, judging him on one game is ridiculous.

There is also the small matter of playing alongside his international team mate... he may help him out a bit.
