According to some on here it seems we have a better manager and better players than Liverpool, despite them finishing above us in the table whilst having European football for the first half of the season to contend with. "What is the point in our players joining Spurs/Liverpool?" I have read on here many times, well ignoring the fact that they pay more money and have better history, they are more recognised globally, have better teams/squads, more chance of European football, bigger fanbases and can attract better players. Sure all these things are because of their history/money but are still big factors for any player.

Are Saints on an upward curve? Yes, most definitely. Are Liverpool on a downward curve? Yes. Have the curves got to a point where the clubs are on a level footing? No, close and much closer than even 2 years ago, but still no. There is also no evidence that Saints can continue the upward curve, I and everyone on here obviously hopes they do, but none of us know whether or not the record breaking season we have just had will stay as a record for many years or we will break it again next year. Another person who doesn’t know this is Nathaniel Clyne. One thing I do know is that if you look back through history the teams who spend the most on players/wages finish the highest in the table, so having money is essential and makes Liverpool’s current state look easier to overcome than Saints breaking the mould and finishing above them regularly.

This is all coming across as very pro Liverpool, which I suppose it is, but believe me when I say they are my least favourite PL club. I hate their deluded fans and their sense of being some sort of “special” club. I am just trying to look at it objectively.

As Koeman said...we have had no serious offers for our players.

Or do they? They may not have the quality of teams that finished ahead of them in the PL but then neither do Sevilla and look what they have achieved two seasons running with players that are good but not outstanding. Using this analogy another manager could get much more out of them!!

That's fair enough, I can't disagree with any of that. But the Saints board, the manager, and most of the players are all signed up for a project to ultimately bring Champions League football to Southampton. Obviously to do that we need the best possible squad, with competition for every place to push players to their limits. What I simply fail to understand is why people like Nathaniel Clyne, and Morgan Schneiderlin as well for that matter, don't want to be a part of that. They are both young enough to give us another couple of years to see if the progress we have made every year since 2009 continues, by which time their value will have increased enormously.

Well in that case then money and history are all that matter at all then, and because Liverpool are ahead of Saints in both we are ****ed

Which means they get better personal terms, so it's win-win for them, as long as the club does well.

Historically we are the Senior team, formed in 1885, Liverpool came along on 1892.

He probably feels he paid over the odds last summer so is cheekily putting in a much lower offer this time. I think a fair price for Clyne would be approximately 30m given his age, current status, ability, length of contract!! How about Lambert plus 30m in exchange for Clyne!!

I see your point, but the other thing to consider is the offer is on the table for Clyne (and presumably Morgan) now. Say they did give it 2 more years, imagine if their form dropped off a cliff, they got seriously injured or the top teams after them went and signed alternatives and they weren’t wanted/needed anymore? I remember reading an article with Chamberlain when he was talking about joining Arsenal and he said something along the lines of “if you don’t take the opportunity now it may never come again” and this was a 17 year old who the majority were saying should stay and continue his development playing regular first team football.

Yes, I remember Oxo saying that. I imagine his father and his agent had a lot to do with what he said, and maybe they had a point, but to me in a strange way it shows a lack of ambition!
