Swords, so everyone else is out of step. I started this as a football thread. go and spread your bigotry elsewhere. this is a QPR site not one for your personal atttacks on every one else. you are just a PP.
When Britain first, at heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter, the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
What ancient conflicts did I dredge up? The whole of the island of Ireland were part of the union from 1801 to 1922. Since 1922 (ie 90 years ago), we have been a seperate country. Just as we were for centuries before the plantation of Ireland in the 16th century. Thousands of Irishmen died over many centuries so I could proudly say I am Irish, not British. This country is certainally not part of any "home nations". If you don't like that, tough.
Bloody hell Finglas, calm down mate. I was just making the point that the "Home Nations" is different to the "British Nations". Just like the term "British Isles" refers to all four Countries too. Its just a footballing term encapsulating every Country on the Islands, nowte political in it. Johnny Giles uses it all the time!
Fair enough, nothing political. Don't you understand that in footballing terms, we are not part of the "home nations" either. England, Scotland, Wales and N.I. are the "home nations". Have we ever participated in the home nations championship for example? The answer is no because we decided to leave the UK 90 years ago.
I disagree. The term "Home Nations" has been used all my lifetime to describe all the International Teams of these Islands. During the '94 World Cup we were regularly referred to as the only "Home Nation" side that qualified. Every time the "Home Nations" are referred to on the BBC and RTE and every other damn Channel in the spectrum, the ROI are included. Whether you agree with that its up to you but that's just the way it is.
Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I have never heard us referred to as a "home nations" team by anybody here including the media. Whenever I have heard that term, it always referred to (England, Scotland, Wales and N.I.). At no stage have I heard it used to include Ireland. Anybody who describes our national team as a "home nation" team is factually incorrect, If we had a united Ireland team prior to 1922 (which we didn't) then technically that term would have been correct. The term is 90 years out of date. If RTE ever used that term, the phone lines to Montrose would be clogged with people complaining. The BBC may have used that term for us in 1994 as our players were the main crop of players playing in the Premiership at the time who managed to qualify for that tournament but RTE wouldn't dare use it.
John Giles uses it all the time. He used it a number of times during the recent Tournament. Anyway, its all pedantic. Although there was only one Irish Soccer team before 1922 and it was us that split it, not the Northerners. A despicable act in my opinion. You are like the Irish version of Col though! All Nationalism and Separatism. I'd like the whole of Europe to be United as one. All for one and one for all!
Johnny Giles is 72 years old Swords. He was born in 1940. We didn't leave the commonwealth until 1949 so technically, he was born a British citizen when he was born. Just like anybody born here prior to 1949, he is entitled to a British passport. He has also lived in the UK for the last 55 years. I take it as a compliment that you find me a strong nationalist, if Col is like that too, good on him I say. I am pro-Europe and a proud European but I am Irish first, European second. I am not a seperatist when it comes to Europe.
Fair points Finglas. I'll take it you weren't in the Seanad yesterday for the Orange Order leader's speech then!
Oh dear, I have missed all the fun on here. Swords once again provoking argument with his half-wit appraisal of the term 'Home Nations'. Your country is called the 'Republic of Ireland' or 'Eire', your forefathers died in bloody campaign to achieve that independence and I can see many of them spinning in their graves that their sacrifices have produced ignoramuses like you. We are the 'United Kingdom' and swear allegiance to 'Queen and country'. In the last World War you were 'neutral' but would have ended up under the jackboot if Hitler had won. Therefore, you are clearly not part of the 'Home Nations'. The Home Nations Championship was always between the four constituent parts of the union, England, Wales, Scotland & NORTHERN Ireland. Even today just look at the national weather forecast on the BBC, weather doesn't exist in the Republic, they only highlight the forecast in Northern Ireland. As for Johnny Giles, don't make me laugh...
Again Sooper displays the most breathtaking of completely off the point digs at another Country. This is a serious question mate so I think for the sake of your mental health (or whats left of it) you should attempt to answer it. What THE F*CK is your obsession with the War?!!! Nobody's talking about War here Sooper. The only War that's going on is in your head you complete fruitcake! You had a field day during the Euro's, mentioning the War on every thread to anyone that would listen. No doubt it got to the point where instead of seeing two football teams line up, in your mind you seen two Army Divisions squaring up to settle old scores from the 1940's. There were Italian and German posters, along with pretty much everyone else, aghast at your blood curdling antics right through the Tournament. Quite frankly, it was embarrassing. Sooper, get this through your head: Hitler's dead! The War ended almost 70 years ago! Its time to put away your "paint your own" plastic soldier collection and get a new hobby. This blood-lust of yours is freaking people out. P.S. No such place as Eire - another thing you cooked up in your head. And John Giles is the best pundit bar none. The BBC and ITV's excuse for punditry is only intelligible for the few moments when they take their cocks out of each others mouths. The only bit of decent analysis that was done last month was when they had Roy Keane on. A dip-sh*t of the highest order yes, but at least he was honest. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it
You just don't get it Swords. The references to the War on earlier threads were part of the banter, you're the one who makes a big deal of it. Your country fought the 'Brits' for independence and their own identity. I'm just pointing out that your country is NOT part of the Home Countries through it's own devices. You're the fekkin' ejit who doesn't want to accept that because it prolongs a non-existent argument and quoting a tosser like Johnny Giles as your evidence is beyond parody. Your dream of a Euro Super State is bollox, it'll never happen. Ireland was only in it for the money, 25 years of the 'Celtic Tiger' were built like a house of cards, the first wind of a recession and it's gone. You and, sadly, I will be paying taxes to pay those debts till kingdom-come. As for these people who were aghast at comments made as build up to a football match - 'BANTER' - where are they? If they or you are so thin-skinned then they shouldn't be on a football forum where 'Tribalism' is part of the culture. If you're so sure everyone on here is so aghast at comments a few England supporters made on a football forum where are the threads of complaint or warnings from the Mods? It's all in that maelstrom of a head of yours. I'm sure you're sitting there analysing every facet of people's comments to launch your next wumming tirade. As I've said before have you ever considered psychiatric treatment?...
