The case for a big target man was exemplified best in our game at Sheff. Utd. on boxing day. They were utter **** for about an hour but suddenly from nothing, at 2-0 down they just banged it up to Ched Evans (they literally crossed it from somewhere near the halfway line) and he scored. If you have a striker who can score a header from that angle it gives you a totally different option.

If the opposition know that you have no option up front, they can sit back knowing that your winger has to hit the byline before their cross can work. How many times did teams sit back in their penalty area against us last season? They saw that they could give us loads of time on the hlfway line because we couldn't do anything from there, and just pile everyone behind the ball. If you have a big lad to hoof it to, they have to close you down to cut the service off. It changes the way they defend completely, which is exactly what we missed last season.

The rules of the game have changed so much in recent years that the adage 'a good big un is always better than a good little un' has been turned on its head.

The likes of Messi, Xavi and Iniesta are midgets as Jamie Redknapp described them last night but players go down with the slightest touch these days and this gives the little technically gifted guys total freedom to express themselves.

Spanish people are relatively small in stature and their skills have meant they tended to be easily brushed aside on the football pitch - not any more though.

Clearly league football is a different level of class albeit you can see that even NP sees the worth of playing without a target man - bringing on a big man such as Adebola would give you a plan B though.

"Spanish people are relatively small in stature".

Let's see if anyone can answer the following -

Which country recently won the world basketball championships, was it -

a) England

b) Spain.
