Indeed. Simplicity will not only make it easier for new members to join in, but also easier for those who will be running and maintaining the sweepstakes!
Yes, I think those are very good points. It looks like hard work to run as it is and keeping it easy to understand is more inviting to potential newcomers; fora can appear kind of cliquey and off-putting from the outside.
I quite like the look of Bando's point scoring system as people (including me) were often disappointed that they got zero points round after round, but that's the only suggestion I'd make to change the sweepstakes. As Red Bull has shown us time and again, continuity is the key to success, and the great appeal of the sweepstakes was in its simplicity. I fear bonus points would make it too complicated, especially for possible newcomers. As far as driver reveals go, yes I think we should definitely keep them, but allow members to chip in ideas for different ways of going about it (as I'm running out of ideas that haven't already been done). As for running it, what say we alternate every GP? E.g. I'll run Melbourne and you (Genj) will run Sepang and then I'll do Shanghai and so on and so forth. Lastly, I'd like to thank Genji, EB, Abs, BLS and everyone for participating and helping run it. Let's see who can topple the reigning champ Cosi!
I'm not a fan of duplicating drivers but if that's what the majority want, fine. I would suggest, though, that we include all 24 drivers in the duplication, not just the six best, to prevent people hanging on for the duplicates. Personally I preferred the idea of latecomers picking teams as a consolation prize and with reduced points. Happy to alternate, Ninja. I, too, like Bando's scoring system.
I was also going to suggest every driver being available twice! This would facilitate 48 participants before the need for teams (which, although successful, made it rather more complicated). Teams could remain but equally, with duplicate drivers, there may well be no need for them. But please read on⦠One of the real benefits of this random but fun game was that it encouraged participants to get their number in early. This was a benefit for the forum in general, since it encouraged people to visit sooner than they might otherwise have done; and of course, many people would visit and comment in other threads too. In order to encourage people to continue to get their early number bid in - even with up to 48 slots - how about the first 24 being twice the value of any duplicated drivers? All it would need would be to log numbers as 6 as usual for the first to get it and 6b for the latecomer, who will be scoring half points if successful. This should be relatively simple to tack on to existing rules (together with any revision of the basic points system); and equally importantly, it should encourage a clamour to the forum for those hoping for more points. - - - o0o - - - I will not be offended if someone thinks this is bonkers. It's just a suggestion and of course, like any, will need the approval and full backing of Genji and Ninja (or anyone else who runs it).
I do too. I like it in combination with Bando's points system because the latecomers would then get half points, as if it was an abandoned race, and there'd be just half a point in it here and there. So the first 24 forum members in would pick numbers 1-24, the latecomers pick 1b-24b.
What I also liked about last year what some of the ways the driver reveal process was done. Some of them were real brain teasers.
In my opinion that was probably the most important aspect of its success and showed a forum community really working well for each other's entertainment. It just depends on the availability and ingenuity of the mods, Miggins, DHC, et al. who all contributed. I think Ninja Kirby and I definitely had the easier job. Is anybody at all interested in trading drivers or shall we just jib that?
I always thought that the driver swaps would be a lot more interesting if you didn't know who you were swapping for. You could let everyone know which driver they had via a PM and then members could agree to swap on the basis of it still being risky. Then, once a deadline had passed all the drivers could be made public. I didn't suggest it though because it would make the very fun 'driver reveals' unnecessary.
I'm going to have to work out ways for the clue for say Vettel and Pic to be very similar, just for that added evilness.
Actually, I think that's a brilliant idea Westy! It could make poker players of us with all sorts of negotiation and bluffing; and would require no extra work from those good souls running it. All that would be needed would be a deadline. However, wouldn't this nullify the 'reveal' process that seems popular with quite a few people? If your idea were to be adopted, wouldn't it require that each player be informed of who they have privately? Actually, the more I think of it, the more it sounds like a lot of extra work for organisers… Still, I like the concept. But - thinking out loud as I write - I just can't see it working if the popular reveal process is retained. Any ideas how the conflict can be avoided or have I missed something obvious? (Very likely at the moment!).
Indeed Cosi, in the last sentence in my previous post I expressed a similar sentiment. Still, could be a laugh for maybe one or two GP's in the year.
I'd keep it the same. You know the old adage "If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it". That applies here.
Yeah. I thought I'd missed something obvious! I'm sure I read it but probably got carries away for a moment. I could sense it at the time because was doing about 17 things at once. Nice idea though. If we didn't have the reveal process, no doubt it would be a good alternative with intrigue all of its own! Cheers.
So the rule changes for 2012 are: - The introduction of the "El Bando Scoring System". - 24 duplicate drivers (Note: All 24 original drivers must be picked before duplicates can be chosen. People who choose duplicate drivers score half points). - The cancellation of team selections. I think we should have a trial period for these changes for the first 2 or 3 GPs to see if they're successful or not. If they're not, it won't change the game drastically if we end up getting rid of some of them. Genji and I will be alternating the running of each GP and the first sweepstakes will start this Friday. If anyone has any objections to this please let Genji, the mods or myself know ASAP. P.S. If anyone has any ideas for driver reveals please PM me. Cheers
Also, the duplicate drivers for latecomers only score half points. Might as well use this thread for discussions on how to run it or change it, too, rather than bog down the actual race sweepstakes threads.
